 "Decent Small Office Workhorse BUT..." 2010-05-04

We've had this printer for over a year and I generally think the Canon imageCLASS MF6540 is a decent all-in-one small office workhorse. It prints, copies and scans and has done so admirably given the mid-to heavy use it gets as a printer and copier. I does its job as the office scanner as well.



PROS:



1. It prints documents well. No complaints about it printing crooked, blurry, etc.



2. Canon toner seems to last quite a while (the large toner cartridge, not the smaller one).



3. It has a document feeder to photocopy a small stack of documents (about 20 pages).



4. It can copy/scan on the flatbed portion of the printer. Good for small/odd-sized documents.



5. Scans in black and white, grey scale or color. We use it for documents, not photographs. The ability to switch between the document feeder or flatbed to scan makes the MF6450 versatile. It comes with software that converts all scanned documents into PDF or JPEG formats.



6. Easy to set up on the network (has an ethernet port) or as a printer connected to a computer.





CONS:



1. Complicated menus. In order to switch between letter/legal sized documents and envelopes on the multifunction tray, you need to scroll through several sets of menus on the printer itself. I have it memorized by heart now.



2. Canon toner is about $140+ for the large cartridge. Not cheap. But lasts for about five months (I try to get every "drop" of ink before replacing the toner).



3. Document feeder is temperamental: it does not like too-thin paper, so it will just "eat" multiple sheets together and jam. Nor does it like folds or staple holes in the paper, because anything that can make the sheets catch together, this will be an instant paper jam in the document feeder. The width adjustment "arms" of the document feeder also causes the paper jams, too: it's a mite skinner than 8.5", so it squeezes the paper, making it difficult for the rollers to pull the paper through the feeder. (The same rollers that jam on too thin paper, or anything that will cause the sheets to catch together.)



4. Slow scanner: it takes about six to ten seconds per page to scan a black and white document at 300 DPI, using the sheet feeder. If have to scan a stack of documents, this not the multifunction machine you're looking for (see Con #3). It seems slower using the flatbed scanner at the same setting. I would recommend a dedicated scanner if you have a lot of documents for scanning.



5. Scanner does not like the color blue, so if you have documents with blue ink, then it will not come out if you scan in black and white. You have to use gray scale, which makes the file a little bigger. This is of some concern if you have to email the scanned document and the recipient has a file size limit on email attachments.



6. Print per page output is a bit slow compared to a dedicated laser printer (had an HP Laserjet 1200 prior to this scanner, it had a faster print output than the MF6540).



7. It's HUGE. Bigger than I thought it would be. If you have a small space, I would not recommend it.



8. It's rather noisy: either using the sheet feeder or printing.





In conclusion, I don't regret buying the Canon Imageclass MF6540 because it has been relatively reliable despite the cons I listed. The document feeder is annoying and has caused some moments where I just wanted to kill it since it was jamming constantly when I was on a deadline. It's a solid office machine, but I do wish it printed/scanned quicker and a less diva-ish document feeder.

The 6500 does most of what my $10,000 machine does, only slightly slower. Toner setting, which can be changed, is a bit rich, but this boosts print quality. Set-up was upset when the Network Port setting inexplicably changed the first night, and had to be revised the next day. Toner is a bit pricey. And, if output speed is an issue, buy a second machine and enjoy a back-up. Then you can say goodbye to expensive service contracts. Canon's got a winner here.

Simply works. Works well through a network from a wifi system. Cost per copy is higher than a large commercial copier, but that is to be expected for a low-volume machine. The ability to print duplex from a computer (we use all Macs) is a plus. It will not scan from a Mac, however, but that is not a problem as we never intended to use it that way. Replacement cartridges are available at a very reasonable cost on Amazon. Canon has brought out a newer model of this machine.

I have two of these machines now. I use them daily in my business. The first one I've had a little over three years, the second one I just purchased. The older machine stopped working two weeks after its three year warranty (Cannon used to give a three year warranty, now it's one). I called Cannon and they fixed it free as good will that my machine was only two weeks out of warranty (how great is that!). I can't say enough about how great these machines are and only $300! PS= I use both machines to print monthly bills (from the auxiliary feed) that are precut and 3.75" x 8.5". This is a bit tricky to set-up as you have to double-click the printer icon and set-up the size as custom on your computer, and you also have to set-up the custom size on the printer itself. Once you get it set up right, your done and don't have to mess with it again.

It is an excellent product for its price. Very easy to set up and very easy to use. I bought it for our office. We were using a copier worth about $3000 new. This machine does everything our old copier does and more. The print speed is great too. I just love this machine.

The D480 is the next generation of the Canon D880/860. The major differences are the D480 has a letter size platen and not legal size platen like its predecessors, and so it is smaller and has a more convenient footprint.



It's fast. easy to use. Great Scanning capability, prints like a charm, and copies quickly and easily. Never had a problem with this unit.

My wife and I make a ton of photocopies for home and work related projects. I decided to find a unit that was a photocopier first, then a printer/scanner/fax. We purchased the d480 after a bit of shopping and research, and a $[...] mail in rebate, and are happy with the choice. I have printed/copied over 1000 pages now and I would purchase this unit again.



The set-up of the unit, however, is extremely frustrating. I am comfortable installing just about any kind of drivers and software, including operating systems and major upgrades, and this unit's installation was very complicated. On the PC, setting up the printing function was very easy, and the scanning function wasn't too much harder. Setting up the network printing/scanning was a bit more complicated, but not more so then any other network printer. The Mac on the other hand, is an absolute nightmare, and I still have not been able to get the scanning function to work on the Mac. Most Mac OS X users are used to Mac's auto detecting printers with little issue. Forget it with the d480. The instructions are very poor. This unit also seems to be designed better as a network unit then a USB unit.



Printing speed and quality is excellent, and the unit is a very capable copy machine. The top loading feeder works extremely well. Other multi-functions that I've used have had top loader issues. I have only tested the fax function twice as we no longer have a land-line (didn't need it). The ScanTools utility that it comes with for scanning is OK. I like HP Scan much better. The scan quality is excellent however.



Overall, once you get it setup, you will be happy with your purchase. I don't know if it could handle a large office of 50-plus terminals, but for a home or small office, it should be just fine.

I'm lovin' this printer. Got it for $[...] after [...] at Staples. Coming from a long line of unreliable inkjets, this really blows all of them out of the water. The fax and copy functions are an added bonus even though I will primarily be using the machine as a PC printer.



Like some other reviewers, I initially had severe problems with lag when using the network scan feature with drivers that came on the CD. However, after I installed the updated drivers and firmware from [...], network scanning worked great (better, in fact, than my standalone HP scanner at work). It's good to see that Canon listened to it's customers' complaints and resolved the network scanning problems with a software update. The Canon also came with OmniPage Pro SE, which is a very powerful scanning and OCR tool...a very nice touch.



I would recommend this product in a heartbeat, even at full price. I hear that this particular model has been discontinued, so be on the lookout for a good deal on a great product!

I have years of computer/printer/network experience, so I'm not new to this.



Printer won't print from Windows 7 unless I stop and start the Print Spooler service.



Won't print at all from Mac, though I admit I'm not a Mac expert. Just get an error message that the printer is offline or can't be accessed. I followed tech support's suggestions to reset the printer, repair permissions, reboot, and reinstall the driver. No help.



Canon tech support is great, though they weren't able to solve either problem.



I've lost confidence in the printer. If I'm having this many problems right out of the box, what's does the future hold?



Back to the store. Looks like it had potential. Lots of features, love the duplexing, copy function worked fine. Too bad.

My experience with this printer is very mixed. It worked for a short time with my iMac G5 and then after upgrading to Leopard, it quit working. I reinstalled the drivers multiple times, with no gain. Canon helpdesk was understanding, polite and patient, but could not resolve the issue. Same issues with my Macbook pro as well. Neither Canon nor Apple could resolve the issue. They both pretty much went through the same steps - removing the drivers and reinstalling with restarts in between. Subsequently the scanner worked with both, but the printer just refuses to work. Funny thing is, it works fine with Windows installed on my Macbook Pro using bootcamp. No problems there at all. When I bought a new Dell laptop, it worked fine with that too (only, it's too irritating to work with Windows after using OS).



About other issues, I had no problems using it as a copier. Print quality is good. Never used for fax. Scanner quality is ok, but automatic feeder always gave lines. Couldn't get rid of them, no matter how many times I cleaned the area as suggested.



The supplied software is so so. Could be improved much. No options for selecting the compression level for PDF or JPEG. On Mac, the option to scan multiple pages is nonexistent (available with Windows). If you scan a multiple page document, it generates multiple documents.

Canon packs this product in a box with sides that literally fall away...saving the strain on your back when unpacking it. It's such an amazing approach to packing heavy office equipment. Everything was packed neatly and precisely; there were no tricks to getting it set up--I had it up and running within minutes. In the one month since I've owned it, I find it to be fast, very straightforward to use, and it produces great quality copies. It seems far better than the previous Canon copier that the D1120 replaced.

I bought two of these machines for use at my office and at home. I specifically needed a networkable printer so that my kids could print homework from their laptops and other desktops could use the printer. What Canon hides extremely well is that this model does NOT scan to or from a network: it prints on a network but it will not scan on one. So, if you set this up to allow printing by several machines no-one can scan to it or from it; the scanner is just disabled. The scanner will only work when the machine is connected to one (and one only)computer. So, you can scan/print to one machine or print on a network but not both. It is almost beyond comprehension to me that a reputable company like Canon would do something this stupid. Save the box because you won't know about the limitations of this printer until you have installed the drivers and set the whole thing up. Otherwise the printer appears solid and the software short and well designed.

I'm very disappointed in this machine. If you only need a printer/copier or have it directly attached to your computer with a usb cable then it presumably works as advertised. It prints envelopes easily and was simple to set up until I tried to scan something.



In my effort to go as paperless as possible, several weeks after the printer arrived, I went to scan something. It didn't work and the instruction manual was not clear at all. I called Canon and was told that this machine was the "bottom of the line" and did not have the capability I asked for. If I wanted to scan from a network (I do only because the physical distance between my computer and the printer means using an ethernet cable rather than usb to connect) I should have bought one of the other higher end models.



I may have missed something but I don't see that important information anywhere in the product description or on the packaging that it arrived in.



The tech suggested that I put my computer on a cart and wheel it over to the printer when I wanted to scan. REALLY! After some time on the phone and several levels of support I was offered a print buffer device that once installed will allow me to scan but only if I use a pc. Of course I mainly use a mac. I can't say if the device works because I have not yet been able to get the installation instructions and set it up. I had to hang up after extended hold times waiting for a Canon rep.

SUM -- Great feature set, untrustworthy in use.

First note, our 3 workstations had not a problem scanning with scan-only CANON 5600F, it was slow, wore out with 1000's of scans. But the 4370 cannot work--as scanner--on W2000, W2003 workstations. [ OS cannot detect the 4370, post-install, on either PC]. When it works, 4370 is *much* faster than 5600F.



PRINTing -- "All 3" PCs work, via SIIG 4-way USB switch. Doesn't seem to be true 600dpi [ like old HP LJ2200 that 4370 was meant to replace] but good enough. Unit is so finicky, seems to say, "Use me for low volume only."



FAXing -- TX, fast w/exc. quality, but no can use doc feeder. RX - fails, but could be incorrect setup--one way to avoid junkFAX . . .



COPYing -- fast, exc. quality



SOFTWARE -- seems unfinished. Hibernating WXP PC, then resuming, *always* triggers a problem due to Canon S'ware, error msg thus:

Microsoft Visual C++ "Unhandled exception in svchost.exe (CNCL4360.DLL) 0xc0000005: Access Violation." Killing the debugger works past the problem.



RETURNS -- On my 4th unit in a year, using replacement plan from big box store, Oct '09. Paper path has been main problem. Newest one makes odd noises on return of head from completed page scan. Also starts skitting -stop-start-stop-start on scans if DPI > 200. To restore smooth scans, must PC reboot.

I decided to go with a Canon all-in-one after being disappointed in HP copiers. It was a mistake. First the good. It copies and scans well with a document feeder which is helpful. That's about all I can say about the good. The bad??? Let's start with a tiny toner cartridge priced at $90 a pop. It doesn't last very long, seems about 1/4 the duration of my old HP 4000 which is still running after 9(?) years. The menu setup is awkward and cumbersome. Want to stop printing of a long document? Forget it!! It requires a chain of commands deep into the menu---the cancel button does NOTHING. Pulling the plug is the only hope to stop the printing mid-job. Printing envelopes using the envelope feeder makes a noise like its eating them PLUS you have to reprogram the menu to let the printer "know" you are using envelopes and NOT 8x11 paper...UGH!!! What a pain. There is no audio or display "Faxed OK" to let you know the fax was transmitted, the green light just stops blinking. Oh, and when the toner gets a little low, like after about 100 copies it seems, the blinking red light comes on in front and won't go out until you change toner. I finally put black electrical tape over it. One final "feature" to rip you off on toner, the Canon just shuts down when the toner gets too low, even though the copies are printing OK. In any HP I've owned, you could print until the copies were barely legible if you wanted to. I would NEVER buy another Canon copier again.

MF4370dn works perfectly with Mac (I tested only with USB). I initially couldn't make it work on my mac mini. After 2 months, I find that the driver only works with a CASE-INSENSITIVE file system!!!!!! Canon should print that clearly in the instructions!

I was looking for a flatbed multifunction laser printer that I could plug into an apple wireless router and print from a macbook pro wirelessly. This Canon seemed like it would fit the bill (price was nice as well!). This setup would be used in a small 1 person office. I have a similar setup at home with an HP multifunction laser (it just isn't a flatbed). I thought about buying the HP flatbed, but decided to give Canon a shot (based mostly on price).



I should have done more research. I've spent days trying to get this to print from the wireless router. It works fine when connected directly to the laptop. I've used a usb cable, cat5 cable, downloaded new drivers, deleted old drivers, blah blah blah. This reminds me of my old PC days when I spent more time trying to get things to work than I did actually working!!



Not sure what printer I'll end up purchasing, but it will definitely be 100% mac compatible.

Have been pleased with this printer now that it's properly installed, as of about two weeks ago (late-April, 2010). I love the auto-feed scanner and double-sided printing. It's a great machine for the price.



However, my PC runs 64-bit Windows 7, and I had functional problems with the software after doing an initial install with the provided disk. If you have Win 7 -- at least if you have Win 7 x64 -- NEVER use the drivers that come on CD with the unit; instead, right away use the latest drivers from the Canon website. After my problems with the CD-based installation, I could not get rid of the CD-installed drivers. As a result, Windows would not let me install the new drivers that I uploaded from Canon. I ultimately gave up and did a Windows recovery to an earlier date and then installed the downloaded current drivers.



Also, if you are running Windows 7, I advise against installing the Presto! PageManager program (version 7) that Canon furnishes on the CD. Per my check with the manufacturer's site, version 7 of Presto! is NOT compatible with Windows 7. (Maybe if you buy this printer a year from now, the CD will contain a later version.)

Love this printer. Used to buy HP. Was never good. Got a Cannon imageclass 3240 first. Great printer but had to load the forms individually which takes a lot of time. Then bought this MF4350d for office last year. Lots of copying, scanning and fax duties. Liked it so much that I just bought three more. Buy Cartridge on Amazon 3 for $59. Very cost efficient and reliable printer.
