I absolutely LOVE this printer...The one thing that made me hesitant to buy it, were the reviews on the envelope printing, which were all true. When you print envelopes, they come out all wrinkly, with edges turned up, but I was lucky enough to have a computer guru change one simple setting in the back of the printer and now my envelopes come out smooth!! The duplex printing, faxing and scanning are all great, color and speed great as well...I have nothing bad to say except it is a little noisy.

After 6 months of fairly hard use in a small business, this printer is still working well. Like the others, I had to search how to fix the tension for envelopes, and I just leave it at the other level all the time. The inability to put a stack of envelopes in the tray is distressing, and the manual feeder jams a lot when using business envelopes. The toner and drum packages are expensive, and I believe they run out long before the toner is gone, since the quality is excellent and then the printer just stops working. All of the printer companies need to quit gouging for supplies and design machines so they can be easily refilled. The duplex function works well, and the general speed is good. The most frustrating thing is that it absolutely will not cancel a job in mid-progress. Even turning off the printer won't stop it, so if you make a mistake and tell it to print 1000 of something, you will probably have to go through all that paper to get it to quit. Pushing the job cancel button does nothing! I only do basic paperwork, so I don't know how it would do for photos, but color copies are reasonably crisp and true. You cannot put it near a wall, because if an envelope jams even a tiny bit in the feeder it automatically stops feeding the previously printed envelope to the output tray and you have to open the back to retrieve it. Move fast, or else the printer will start to burn the stalled envelope, leaving a yellow heat mark. With jams, took over an hour to print 80 envelopes.

Printer is quiet, great quality images. Did not install fax drivers, does not allow easy walk-up scanning, does not install easily to network. If you're an IT pro then you won't mind spending an hour getting it to work on a network, but if not then you'll need a long time and a lot of help to get fax, scanner and printer to work on a network properly. The device install software ought to do most of that easily but it doesn't. This would rate five-star and a great value if the driver (for Windows 7) would install better.

Sure, it's more expensive, but it does everything, and very well. Great quality, sets up easily, have had a year now and zero problems. Large standard tray is awesome, fast prints, flawless wireless connectivity, auto-feed works great, scanner flawless (love the large bed), simply can't say enough great things about this printer. Yup, it must draw a lot of power because sometimes my lights dim when it kicks on. And the humming of the motor is fairly loud, but having never had a laser before not sure how relates to other lasers. I'll never buy another HP printer as long as I live, but boy am I happy with this Brother!

Pros: Low price of printer

Pros: Good quality print ... while it works



Cons: Makes infernal racket when not operating in "quiet" mode

Ceased working properly after only 4 months

Epson would not honor warranty

Epson customer service is totally unsatisfactory

Epson ink carrtidges are outrageously-priced ... one set of 4 cartridges could exceed original purchase price of printer.



Other Thoughts: After about 2 months, I had replaced all the original OEM ink cartridges with Epson-compatible ones. There was no difference in print quality or printer operations using the non-Epson ink ... until a few days ago. When the black cartridge started producing spotty print, I thought .. ah, time for head cleaning! Yeah, right. After running 8 consecutive nozzle checks and exhausting 2 full magenta and yellow ink cartridges in the process, I still did not get any print pattern from the black, magenta, and yellow cartridges, all of which I replaced again. I then started e-mailing Epson tech support, and got nothing but the proverbial run-around. I called the number provided for warranty service. After better than 30 minutes (including wait time and holds) on a toll line, I was told that nothing could be done under the warranty because I was using non-Epson ink. That "verdict" was subsequently amended to state that I first had to buy a full set of 4 Epson ink cartridges (~$53.70)! STAY AWAY, AS WILL I!

This all-in-one prints quickly at good quality as claimed, but I soon discovered it is very fussy about paper. I like to use back sides of old paper for drafts. It rejects them if even slightly curled at the edges. Then I discovered it wouldn't accept transparency sheets at all - it either says (falsely) that the sheets caused a paper jam or says no paper is loaded. (Granted, overhead transparency projection is on the way out, but it is still occasionally the best thing available.) Then I discovered the NX515 won't accept paper with 3-hole punches - much of my used paper has 3 holes in it already. Were all these rejections a problem with my individual machine or a deliberate feature? I had read the specs on Amazon quite carefully before buying, and there was no mention of such limitations. I went to the Epson website and such limitations are not mentioned in the NX515 specs. After some effort searching the Epson website, I finally found in the additional FAQs for this printer that these limitations are deliberate features. There is apparently another such feature: the only envelope you can print on is the #10. I use #12's sometimes.



None of these restrictions applied to my old Epson CX4600! Is this progress to add such restrictions and not even announce them? I guess the NX515 has an optical sensor and uses it to reject all sorts of media to limit jams, but I need to print on the other media and now I've already bought this machine. Maybe I better not junk my old CX4600 after all - I bought a new machine because the red ink on the old one wasn't printing and no amount of cleaning, new catridges, or fixes suggested in forums on the internet could fix it.



Does anyone know if competing printers from other companies now have similar media restrictions?

First off .... when giving or reading reviews for printers, I NEVER mention anything about ink usage (unless it starts shooting it all over & making a mess, which has never happened yet), nor do I give much weight to the numerous reviews (usually "1-stars") which focus solely on that aspect. The reason is simple .... they ALL use more ink than they should & ALL printer companies rely on a large percentage of their revenue from future ink sales. The "This thing sucks because I had to buy another ink cartridge within 6 months" type reviews really don't tell me anything, other than .... yes, this printer actually DOES consume ink, just like the rest of them. A printer which doesn't use more ink than you think it should is either broken, or not being used.



After going thru approx. 6 printers in the last 10 years or so, I can honestly say this is the VERY best one I have ever owned .... by a LONG shot. The top-most thing which impressed me to no end, right off the bat, was the EXTREME simplicity & efficiency of the installation process. I've used Lexmarks, HPs, & other Epsons. I refuse to buy another HP because of the often-irritating hoops you have to jump thru just to get the thing operating. Lexmarks are a bit better usually, but I personally don't think they have the quality of Epsons or Canons (although I've never used the latter).



I even wasn't exactly planning on setting this one up as a wireless, since I admit that I'm very ignorant about the complexities of wireless stuff. But glancing at the manual for maybe 2 minutes, it looked like it might be a very simple procedure. It didn't disappoint either. After installing the cartridges, plugging up one power cord, & pressing about 6 buttons & "Okay" tabs .... I was printing a test page within minutes. I never had to do one thing except insert the disk, press the said buttons, & wait on it to do it's thing. Any type of object gets an extra brownie point from me if it impresses me right from the start, meaning the install process.



Print quality, loudness, physical looks, speed, features, value, every feature about the printer is at least as good, usually better, and some of them MUCH better, than any of the half-dozen printers I have ever used. Would I buy the same one again .... most definitely. Would I recommend it to others .... most definitely. Do I think this thing will do the job that I need it to do, for a decent time-period .... I hope so & it has of yet given me ZERO reason to think otherwise.



Even though I sifted through all feedback, on multiple sites & for multiple printers, & made a "modified" ranking on the 1-to-5 scale for each, I still couldn't quite find one with the 4+ stars that I was hoping to find .... at least not one below about $200. (By "modified", I mean that I eliminated all of the 1 & 2 star ratings which dealt ONLY with the amount of ink the printers used). This one kept coming up about 3.5 - 3.75 stars at the best, which was actually about what ANY of the 6-8 best printers (all Epson) I compared were ranking.



So I finally just decided this one had about as good of a reputation from users as I was going to find, even though not QUITE as good as what I was looking for. But 30 minutes after hooking it up, and several test-printings later, I have absolutely no reason to rank it any lower than a 4. Since, as mentioned earlier, the superb installation process impressed me so much, I'm bumping that up to a full 5 stars.



Nothing is perfect, although I have yet to find anything I DON'T like about the printer. But it deserves better than 4 out of 5 stars. I can't do a 4.5 on Amazon, so it happily gets a 5 from me.

The noise is awful on this printer. It starts to print with an actual bang. The type quality for documents is very nice however, even at lower print quality settings.
