I've been using this printer for over a year now and I have to say it lived up to my expectations. I am not a heavy user of paper but when I do use it, it is for everything from photos to mailing labels. It does the job everytime. It IS a little noisy but in a home office, it is no worse than anything else I use.

"Awful. Avoid these printers at all cost. Does not work. HP cannot make a decent printer anymore." 2010-08-09
By Amazon Man (Marietta, GA USA)
I've owned this printer for more than 9 months now. The replacement costs for the cartridges are beyond ridiculous. As soon as you replace one it starts warning you that the new one is near empty and tries to port you automatically to the HP website to order more. This makes the software pretty much useless. The copier/fax has NEVER worked correctly. It will not feed from the top tray and therefore you are left having to manually copy or fax each page from the glass one-by-one. The "optional" bottom sheet feeder is nothing more than a paper storage compartment. The most stupid engineering of any printer I've ever seen has NO software or hardware method of recognizing that the top sheet feeder is out of paper and switch automatically to the bottom feeder. Come on HP. Are you kidding me? If the top sheet feeder runs empty and you have a full tray below, you can now open up the bottom tray and remove the paper and replace the top tray's paper. Well duh, Captain Obvious. I can also pull it out of a drawer and replace the top feeder paper. I should give some credit where credit is due though. This extra heavy device has successfully held my credenza down for 9 months straight now. I sleep well at night knowing my office furniture won't get up and move around but unfortunatly, that's not why I bought it.

Very disappointed yet again with this HP product.

By Lee Rosoff (Taunton, MA)
The moment I opened the box, I loved this machine. Faxing and copying is as easy as 123. Using the special Advanced Photo Paper by HP prints wonderful pictures. This special photo paper will not make the colors run once it comes out of the printer. I find the 2 printer trays extremely useful. It's nice not having to fill the trays for a long time as they hold 250 sheets per tray. The ink cartridges also last a long time especially black ink which yields over 2000 pages using the 940XL Cartridges. I've read complaints of the printer jamming. That only happened once when my 10 year old daughter was using it, but I myself have had no problem. I have also read complaints that it is noisy, again not so terrible. Although it is a big unit, I love it, you will too.

 "Love this printer" 2010-08-21
By mauinick
This printer is great. The setup took a couple of minutes because my router requires a password. I had to plug it into my computer with the included USB cable.

I love the fact that the printer shuts itself off and, without any intervention, turns on and starts printing as required.

In addition, the speed is amazing. I've been used to an ink jet printer, which was speedy for an ink jet, and when I saw the first page out of the HP I thought it had just passed a blank page.

Not having to plug this into my computer with yet another cable to add to my rats nest of cables is another great feature of the printer.

I highly recommend this printer.

it's good and still works well till now.

I was quite puzzled when I tried to get it out of the package.

there are many steps to set it up and you have to adjust many parts of it.

on the other hand it's quite easy to install on the computer and you need no cds.

main body look hard and strong.

but the paper in and our trail is easy to break, as fas as I am concerned.

print in good condition and not stuck my paper.

a little noisy.

there is a button you can turn it on or shut it down.

wires behide the printed makes it not able to stand besides the wall.

"Great little printer, cumbersome wireless setup on macs" 2010-08-12
By Christina Gandolfo (Wakefield, MA United States)
I picked this printer up at Staples today for $99, a good amount less than Amazon's selling it for.

The printer is pleasing to the eye, sleek and black, low profile, and very attractive.

As far as printing power goes, the performance is comparable to any other low cost laser jet on the market. I like that it shuts off and turns back on automatically when you print to conserve energy (plus no annoying blinking lights when you're not using it). Honestly, I stick with laser jets because I do a lot of printing for school and I like to highlight. Try doing that with an ink jet and see how quickly your letters smudge and your highlighters turn black...

Setting up printers to work wirelessly on a Mac is usually a pretty involved process and this printer is no exception. The instructions included explain wireless setup for a PC but do NOT go into any useful detail about Macs.

Luckily, I found a YouTube video that detailed step-by-step how to set the printer up wirelessly on a Mac. If it wasn't for the video, setup would have taken me a lot longer. I use a laptop, so wireless printing for me is a must.

You can find the video here:

"Perfect Home Use Laser Printer" 2010-08-06
By Harry (APO, AE United States)
Being in IT and certified on all things related to networking and desktop computing I knew going into a home printer purchase that I wanted something that can handle more printing per cartridge than what most inkjets put out. I chose the HP 1102W based on user reviews and specs.

It was a worthwhile purchase. Item comes as described and has the benefit of being a laser printer. Fast clean/crisp printing for standard home use and maybe even small office use. It prints fast after a brief warmup and the printer will go into shutoff mode when idle for some time conserving energy. I would recommend this if you are looking to do B/W one sided printing in your home.

"The Brother HL-3070CW has an odd but serious defect" 2010-07-20
By Sarah (USA)
This Brother printer would not work. I went to the Brother website, which advised me I could make it work by using it without a surge protector. I would have to use it plugged directly into the wall outlet. I returned the printer to Staples.

Brother obviously knows about this defect but continues to sell the product with the defect. Brother obviously doesn't care about the inconvenience to a consumer who may have to struggle to get a bulky, heavy printer transported, unpacked, and set up, researched, and then back to the store. I'll be looking only at other brands now.

"Printing on cardstock is slow and painful." 2010-06-04
By D. Frazier (Flagstaff)
I am printing on Kromecoat 12 pt. glossy cardstock. Cardstock will not feed from the normal paper tray and must be fed from the manual feed tray. You must feed the cardstock one piece at a time. This process is very slow and requires constant human interaction. I calculated the maximum print speed with letter-size cardstock at 3 or 4 sheets per minute, not the 17 pages per minute advertised. The other big problem is that my cardstock comes out with a pronounced curl. I am currently letting my printed sheets rest under several reams of paper in the hope that the curl will be straightened out in a few days. You would not expect this curling problem in a machine that is advertised as having a straight-through paper path. But it does. Also, the rear paper exit option that is supposed to allow for a straighter paper path seems goofy. The cardstock feeds fine regardless of which exit you use. For me, using the rear exit just means I have to reach farther over the machine to get my print-outs. This printer is not really designed to work well with cardstock. Even the manual paper tray that you are supposed to use with cardstock is a bit of a joke. The "tray" with the paper guides is only about two-inches wide, meaning that it is not really long enough to make sure that paper or cardstock is aligned properly as it enters the machine. To make matters worse, the paper guides built into the tray have a tendency to slide back and forth so you have to constantly reset them, and try to hold them in place with your fingers as you feed the paper into the machine. I finally taped the paper guides where I want them with scotch tape. When you feed cardstock, you should put slight pressure on the cardstock to help it out as it is drawn in by the printer. Also, you need to be careful about your timing if you are feeding multiple sheets into the machine. If you are too fast with your feeding, the machine will think a paper jam has occurred, and you will have to withdraw the cardstock, open the top of the printer, and then close the top of the printer to get the print job back on track. The good news is that real print jams have yet to occur while using the manual feed slot. The only reason I gave this printer three stars is that the print quality is good, the price is reasonable, the machine is quiet, and easy to set up. I only started using this printer yesterday. I expect the cost of toner could be a problem because the toner cartridges seem quite small. Each cartridge has its own built in drum, so these are probably quite pricey. But I am hoping that I will be able to refill the cartridges in order to save money. We will see. If refilling proves problematic, then operating this machine long-term could prove too costly for me, especially given the hassles of printing on cardstock.

"Great laser prints for the money" 2010-05-20
By Cowboy Bill (Omaha, NE USA)
I had read a so-so review for this printer online so my expectations were low when it arrived. But when I printed the color demo sheet after setting the printer up, my doubts vanished. It prints color very well and the text is sharp and clear.

I also use an Epson all-in-one ink-jet printer in my home office, and the Brother laser printer is definitely a better printer. However, it isn't always tremendously better; unless you were holding print samples from both printers in each hand to compare them, you might not notice the difference when printing text-heavy or grayscale pages.

I'm a graphic designer and illustrator, so having that extra bit of quality is important to me. If you're just printing black-and-white text all the time, however, a less-expensive multifunction ink jet with a scanner included might be the way to go.

The cartridges for this Brother printer are pricey, but that comes with laser printers from all manufacturers. All in all, I'm happy with this printer.

"HERE'S HOW TO FIX THE TONER "OUT" PROBLEM" 2010-05-01
By Mr. Steve W. Robertson
Read the other reviews for details about this printer.

My problem is that I printed a few hundred pages and then the printer reported IT WAS OUT OF TONER. WTF? The "starter" toner was supposed to be at least a few thousand pages.

I made the mistake of buying a new black toner cartridge. Then after it printed a few pages, it said the magenta cartridge was out of toner! I was trying to print black! This printer has a serious problem of not knowing when or if the toner cartidges is either out of, or completely full of toner.

After I found this trick, I got another 1,000 pages out of that "empty" toner cartridge.

Here's how to fix the problem (quoted from someone else but it really works... you can Google this problem and it will say to put electical tape on the sensor, but that does NOT NOT NOT work with this printer. Only this will work):

Toner Reset Menu for Brother HL3070:

1. Open Cover where you access toner cartridges

2. Press CANCEL & SECURE PRINT buttons at one time and you'll see the toner menus on screen

3. Press + or - to navigate through to the toners you need to reset. Hit "Y" to reset the toner. Scroll through and repeat for each toner color as necessary.

4. Hit OK button when prompted.

Reset menu for the durable parts counters:

1. Open cover where you access toners

2. Press GO and + button at once, you'll see menu come up displaying reset counters for drum, fuser, etc.

Brother SUCKS for trying to make you buy a new toner cartridge when there is absolutely nothing wrong with the one you have. And then trying to hide this information from you. I won't buy from this manufacturer EVER AGAIN.

 "a little disappointed" 2010-04-07
By C. Achterberg
Frankly I am a little disappointed with the printer. I did a lot of research and thought I had found the right one. It was rated a top performer. As long as you are using regular paper it does fine but I wanted a lazer printer so my ink wouldn't run. I like doing alot of diferent projects that require a lot of different papers. This printer has an opening in the front where you are suppose to insert the special paper and it barely works you have to mess with it alot to

get it to suck the paper in and as for trying to print on the back side of a piece of paper that has already run through the machine FORGET IT! I also am having a hard time finding specialty papers for it. I ended up having to by lazer photo paper on line because no one carries it in the stores.

 "Not a wireless Printer" 2010-08-11

I had to contact Brother 2 times to get my printer set up wirelessly. Nothing they did and had me do worked. I then had a computer technician come over and he couldn't get it to work. I even contacted Verizon Fios and they gave me all I needed (which I already had) and it still didn't work. I had the proper wire to connect the printer to my router.

I use my Brother Lazer printer more than I use this machine so can't really comment on how long the ink lasts. I bought this mainly for the duplex scanner.

 "ehh!" 2010-08-01

We bought this becasue it was a wireless unit and boy was it a pain in the butt to set up. Initially we had a cable modem and it seemed like weekly I would have to call my cable co. to figure out was was the best setting for it. Then we moved and had DSL again. Not as tricky this time around to set up well I think the hours of frustration prior to this helped that affair. Then we started having this problem when I got a new laptop and my husbands laptob had to be on and open since it didn't recognise mine. Gets even better folks so my laptop went away for a while, I get it back and what do you know, I don't need to open the other laptop and it works just fine. Never touching one setting on it. major complaints no double sided printing, not too user friendly, the head cleaning function comes on at 3 in the morning, wish it had auto tray when you go to copy something from it. It prints but will not buy another like it again.

This is the second Brother all-in-one I have purchased. (The first is still being used at my old duty station and all are pleased with it.) This one, for my new duty station is awesome. I have tried the OCR and was amazed at the quality. A couple of clitches in translating, for instance the recycle symbol at the bottom of the page was translated "ow" but with a quick read through you can catch things like that. It was easy to set up. Have not set it up for fax yet. We have to call a tech in for that. But as a copier-scanner-printer it is awesome. A great investment of less than $400. I don't think you will be disappointed with this machine.

"Broke down within 2 weeks" 2010-05-08
By Jancis Curiskis
Bought this Item due to it's price and ability to scan in 11 x 17 format. I bought it understanding that at this price it would be made of cheap thin plastic parts that the operator would need to handle carefully to prevent breakage. 3rd time using it I turn it on to scan and it goes blank and no longer comes on. It has been in the repair shop for over a week now. The repair shop had plenty of "brother" products keeping them in business. needless to say I am a bit worried about the reliability of this product. Ease of use, setup, and print quality really don't come into play if the machine does not work and ends up spending more time in the repair shop than here working for me. Perhaps this is an unfortunate one time glitch. My advice would be to check with your local repair shops and find out what machines seem to be frequenting their shelves.

The Epson Workforce 1100 is great. It's a handsome piece of equipment, too - it may take up a good amount of space, but it looks great doing it! Both color and black & white prints come out quickly and quietly.

The only downside to this printer is the size of the ink cartridges. I only use the printer for specific projects, so my use is more as a secondary printer and the small ink cartridges are no big problem for me.

Setup was a breeze and it performs spectacularly within my installation of Windows 7 Professional. I really enjoy my wide format printer much more than I had originally anticipated...flowcharts are much nicer blown up on a 13" x 19" sheet than on the typical 8.5" x 11" - I absolutely love it!

I'll never buy an Epson again. I'm so tired of all the noise, shaking, clogged inkjets, slow startup, running the cleaning cycles and using up ink doing so, wonky color, CONSTANT missfeeds on paper etc. I've had this one about three months, and think I'll just put it out on the curb. It's not worth my time to deal with it anymore. Maybe it's just not meant to work with a mac. (I've had printers of one sort or another for 15 years. This one is the worse. Maybe they're all just loss leaders for cartridge sales.)

If you use Windows 7 the Workforce 1100 printer will install just fine with Epson's Window 7 compatible driver. Then after a week or two it will cease to function. You will then contact Epson Support, they tell you your printer doesn't print anymore because of Microsoft issues. They will then hang up in your face, then you will go buy a Canon printer with valuable lesson about Epson products learned.

This is a very good printer. It's fast and the output looks great. The built-in duplexing is terrific and has saved me a great deal of paper. There's one problem - it goes to sleep after a period of idleness and I can't wake it up without turning it off and back on again, which is inconvenient. I posted a question to Samsung about this but haven't heard back. Other than that, I recommend it.

"Best printer I've ever worked with" 2010-04-28
By M. Rixman (Colorado Springs)
About me: I'm a college student, this printer sits in my bed room. I may not put it through the ringer like a small office would, but I do quite a bit of printing with it

Also, I used to test printers (and other electronics) as my job. I've seen many printers in my day that I thought were poorly designed, and only a small few that I thought were well designed. This one tops that second list.

I planned on reviewing this printer once the starter cartridge ran out, but it's been three reams of paper and almost a year since I've got it and It's still going strong. In all that paper and all that time I've had only one jam--which was easy to fix and probably a result of my sloppy paper-input methods.

After owning an inkjet for years--a $100 printer that was burning a hole in my wallet via cartridges--I am so glad I went for this printer. It's worth the initial investment for sure.

The duplexer works like a charm, a feature I don't expect at all on printers of this size.

The network capabilities are exactly what I needed. Keeps my USB ports empty, everyone in the house can use it, works for the Windows and Linux machines in the house, I love it.

It's no photo printer, but I don't need it to be

It's not quiet, but I don't need it to be.

Amazingly, the bundled CD included the necessary .ppd file for me to set this up in Ubuntu (worked automagically, by "set this up" I really mean "get the duplexor to work"). This NEVER happens, I was expecting a struggle--printer software is one area that machines shackled to Windows seem to have a particularly heavy advantage. I was so pleased to find that this was a 1 minute setup regardless of the operating system in question.

 "Don't buy this printer" 2010-04-02

After using our work horse Apple Laserwriter 360, which never gave us a bit of trouble, for over 12 years, the Samsung ML-2851ND was a HUGE disappointment. We specifically bought it because it was advertised as being able to handle card stock. This printer can't even print envelopes well. If you use the manual feeder in the standard mode, the envelopes are completely crinkled. And when you "load the paper with the side to be printed on facing up, open the rear cover and pull the guide of both sides down" to avoid the crinkles, as instructed in the manual, the print smears. Card stock isn't even an option. We've had nothing but jams. After the latest jam, the printer won't even work and the trouble shooting information in the instruction manual is useless to solve the problem. Our IT guy had nothing good to say about this printer, which should have been our first clue. I guess you get what you pay for.

The printer had to be a laser printer, fast, network-ready and, of course, low-cost. After searching various review sites including Amazon.com, I finally concluded that the Samsung ML-2851 ND printer most closely fit what I was seeking.

In no particular order, these are my likes and dislikes about this printer:

Likes: It's fast! Of course, I am used to a 12 ppm laser, so just about anything in the market today would seem speedy compared to it. The warmup time required after the printer wakes from sleep mode is very short compared to other printers I have used over the years.

The duplexer is a great feature for a printer at this price level. In order to bring the cost of production in line with the street price of the printer, I wonder if Samsung might not have used a cheaper, less reliable transfer roller in their duplexer? Time will tell...

It is quiet. I can barely hear this printer in operation and often find myself going to check it just to make sure the print job was processed. I guess that could be seen as a drawback, but I like the quiet of my house when it's just me and the dog working on my school homework.

Built-in Ethernet spared me from having to get another print server for my home network.

The Mac setup is easy if you are familiar with configuring a network printer. But, in the course of setting up this printer for a mixed Windows and Mac LAN, I did find a few little issues I didn't like.

Dislikes: The printer network settings allow for DHCP, but the driver looks for the printer by IP address only. This is a major issue if you want to let IP resources be managed by a DHCP server because of the number of network appliances on a LAN segment. Leaving the printer on in order to keep the IP address leased to the printer is not an option. It appears that when the printer goes into sleep mode for power saving, it doesn't request the re-leasing of its assigned address. If you are intending to use this printer on a network using the TCP/IP protocol, the only way you are going to get reliable network operation is to assign this printer a static IP address.

The Mac driver is already built into Mac OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard). Nothing in the User's Guide indicates this, nor were there any notes on the Samsung support web site about this. Using the install CD that is provided with the printer is not recommended except to install the Samsung Smart Panel. On the Mac, this utility isn't that useful.

Speaking of Smart Panel, I don't like that it automatically loads for the Windows driver when the computer is booted. I have not found a way to disable this feature. Fortunately, you can tell Smart Panel not to load on computer boot in the Mac version.

The printer preferences in the Windows driver are not as well implemented as I believe they could be. For example, enabling duplex printing does not necessarily enable duplex printing. The user also has to select if the duplex print should follow the long side or short side of the paper. In the Mac driver, duplex printing is a simple check box option.

Even though this printer has multiple feed paths (Paper Tray 1, Paper Tray 2 [optional], Manual Feed), the driver will only allow envelopes to be fed through the manual feed slot -- one at a time. For someone who is used to printing envelopes from my address book without having to go to the printer every time a single envelope needs to be printed, this is a big disappointment.

Print output seems a little light unless the printer is set to 1200 dpi with the toner save option disabled. I have been playing with these settings to see if there is a way to tweak my documents without giving up maximizing toner cartridge life.

Most of the dislikes are minor for me. I do wish Samsung hadn't put a DHCP setting in the printer when their own driver won't recognize the printer if the printer IP address changes. It would have been far better for me if they had simply instructed the user to set a static IP address and forget it. That would have saved me a few days of network issues.

Overall, I like this printer. It has met my most critical needs with a couple wants tossed in for good measure. It is a lot of SOHO printer for the price. Time will tell if the toner cartridges have enough print life to justify a higher rating for this printer.

"Defective Machine Lasted Only a Month" 2010-08-03
By Lee (Texas)
We have used many brother MFC machines at my business and they have generally been dependable. We recently purchased the Brother MFC 8890 DW, however, and it was a problem machine from the time it arrived. The heat was so high when envelopes were printed that they came out with the glue already sealed. Within a month, in a setting where the machine was used solely for printing letters and other documents from a computer, and sporadic copies were made with it, it malfunctioned and would not work again.

In fairness to Brother, they agreed to ship a new machine to replace the bad one, but it was a serious disruption to our business and we had to deal with the hassle of repacking and shipping the defective machine back to Brother.

This bad experience with Brother's high end machine makes it tempting to purchase only the lower level MFC machines and use them until they die, then replace them with another lower level "disposable" machine.

"Beware: Set up is difficult and wireless has not worked" 2010-07-22
By Jocelyn C. White (Portland, OR United States)
The panoply of features sounds great. The problem is getting any of them to work. If you are thinking about buying this product, ask yourself whether you or someone you know has expertise in setting up complex electronic equipment. It is far from a plug in and simple software install and setup. We have not been able to get this product to work wirelessly at all, despite using the less than ideal instruction manual and going to the Brother website for help. And, it only occasionally works on the computer it is wired to. If you do decide to buy this, make sure you send it right back to Amazon if it does not work for you. You may think you want to work on getting this purportedly great product to perform for you, but you have only 30 days to do that under their policy, and you will be sorry if you don't act timely. We have 3 Macs on a home network, and the printer is basically taking up space at this point. Also know that Brother's customer service number in the product information packet is only available when most people on the West Coast who work during the day are getting ready for work, working, and commuting (9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern, M-F only and no holidays) and that I was unable to get a technical support number for Brother from Amazon.

"Great printer & scanner for Mac" 2010-07-06
By Ka Na (Michigan, USA)
Have been using this for about an year with my Macs and PCs as networked printer.

It works very well with (Intel) Mac as a network printer and scanner with OSX Leopard/Snow Leopard's own drivers.

Acrobat Pro 9 (on Mac) didn't find the scanner initially, but the remedy was easy - just had to install the TWAIN driver from Brother's support site.

Works perfectly as a stand-alone fax when needed.

 "Glad we bought it" 2010-08-20
By Sharon L. (New York)
This thing is great. I do some desktop publishing for friends with home businesses, and this printer gives clear, sharp originals for reproduction. It's fast, has a nice scanner and reads all our cards. I like the wireless function, too. The scan/copy colors are true. Plus the ink cartridges are cheap. The only thing I don't like is the software that comes with it. I replaced another Lexmark that had terrific photo editing software. If you have other software, don't remove it thinking the newer printer will have a better program. Other than that, I recommend this printer.

 "can't rate yet" 2010-05-30
By J. Brandt (SD)
I can not yet rate this item. The web site suggested ordering a usb cable to go with the printer so I ordered that. When I received the printer there was no usb port. So I ordered a different cable to go from the 25 pin port on the printer to the computer's usb port. I ordered this on May 17th and am still waiting for Amazon to ship it. They say that it may arrive around June 9- 18th. I think that this is quite the wait for a printer cable. I will rate this product when I can actually use it..

 "old reliable work horse" 2008-12-08
By Tyler J. Hoyt
I've bought 6 of these units now. They get consistent heavy use and hold up fairly well considering. Will continue to buy them. They last me about 3 years before they die. This isn't bad for the abuse we put them through.

The setup programming is a real chore and I have to re-learn the process every time I set up a new one.
