"Save Your Money, Buy a Laser Printer!" 2010-08-16
By MuziKween (Spring, TX United States)
We have this printer at a small business where I work and it's the worst all-in-one I've ever used. I have a Lexmark all-in-one at home that is much easier and faster that this HP. It's PAINFULLY slow at everything, scanning, copying, printing, you name it. It always has "10" set as default number of copies and we have not been able to change it. Forget getting HP help, they are the worst in the biz for customer service! Office Depot had the Brother Laser Printer MFC 7340 on sale for $119. Toner cars are way higher yield and will cost you less in the long run and one toner cartridge costs about $25 bucks, same as inkjet with much higher yield. Cost per copy is better with laser.

"Worked for a few months" 2010-08-14
By Missoula (Portland, OR USA)
I bought this printer because it was on sale for $59.95 and I thought it was a great price. Amortized out, that cost me $20 a month because it has quit working. It says it's printing, but never does and then I can't even shut it down. Cheap means cheap and this is a cheap little machine that will not last.

"Caution on the customer service from HP (if you print on envelopes, watch out)" 2010-08-04
By Unhappy with HP service
I used the J4580 all in one printer to print on bond paper, plain print paper, and on #10 size envelopes. The printer quickly began having problems continuing to feed paper correctly into the printer (it would either not read the paper/envelope was there or it would pull it in crooked and repeatedly jam the machine). The rollers where the paper feeds in are very hard to get at to clean out the jammed material and to check if all of the rollers were turning to pull the paper into the machine.

The customer service from HP was quite a lengthy process. Each call took at least 1 to 1 1/2 hours (even when they had my history and knew we were dealing with the same issue I had had on each of my replacement machines). My machine was replaced 3 times and should have been replaced a 4th time while under warranty (for the exact same issue) when I was within 5-6 days from the expiration of my warranty. HP showed my warranty expiring 3 weeks before it actually did. I offered to fax them my receipt for purchase but they told me, instead, they could research this with my invoice number and call me back the next day. I did not receive a return call. I have since purchased an all-in-one from another manufacturer.

By the way, the volume of letters and envelopes that I was printing prior to this problem beginning was in the range of 10 to 20 (the range is given because I had 4 machines that had the same issue and some stopped working sooner than others).

If you are planning to use your printer for envelopes and letters, I would not recommend this machine.

On one of my phone calls, the HP customer service person tried to sell me an upgraded HP machine for a "great price" he claimed would only continue if I took advantage of the purchase during that phone call. As we were on the phone I looked up the machine he was suggesting and found it online for exactly the same amount he offered. He also suggested that due to the amount of use for printing envelopes (remember, this stopped working after only printing 10 to 20 letters and enveloopes) that I should buy one of their HP machines in the $4000 to $5000 range.

"Your really gonna kick yourself if you buy this printer!" 2010-07-28
By Michelle Banks (LA,CA)
I bought this on sale for $50.00 and I still was overcharged. The cartridges have to be full for this thing to work. If you replace the black cartridge you have to also replace the color cartridge or the nag light stays on and you cannot print anything. This is the case even if the color cartridge has never been used and was not indicating low ink previous to changing the black ink cartridge. This did not happen initially, this is a recent development. If you want to print in B/W only don't get this printer because you have to have a costly color ink cartridge in place and it has to be new. The printer software is clunky and sometimes does not open at all. I have gotten updates for the software but it still is really not as good as the software I got a few years back from HP. Also my Windows 7 computer does not find this printer on my network and states it needs another driver.HP only wants to sell supplies for this thing and the cost is high. All of the software has links to HP to buy cartridges which is very annoying. If you don't print much your better off passing this by and going to Kinko's or Office Depot or any local place. If you do print regularly, get a better printer. I have had this for over a year and the situation just gets worse. The alignment no longer works although it states it's aligned and the software is inadequate for fixing this issue. DON'T THINK BECAUSE YOU DON'T PRINT MUCH THIS IS THE ONE FOR YOU.
