"Owner for 6 years, High cost but very very reliable!" 2010-04-29
By E. Juarez
I've been using these HP mobile printers for my mobile business since 2004. What I love about these is they are very very reliable, never had any real problems with them. They cost alot of money but are worth it if you need a realible trouble-free printer on the go. I also like the fact that the newer printers still use the same lithium ion batteries and Bluetooth cards from when I first purchased mine back in 2004 wich is great. Ink lasts a long time too at least for me, I probably print out 9 or 10 invoices per day and I only have to buy cartridges about 2 times a year. The only thing you have to watch out for is if you leave your printer in your van or work vehicle in really cold weather the printer cartridges will stop moving. I learned this while I tried to print an invoice for one of my customers during the winter, just make sure if your going to permanently mount the printer or leave it in your vehicle that you periodically put a little oil on the moving parts during the cold weather season and everything should be fine.

By King Barber Shop (Richardson, TX USA)
I've owned several inkjet printers over the years, and my HP printers seem to work the best. This one "feels" sturdy and durable, and for the past 2 years it's been great. If you're looking for a good portable or small general-purpose printer, this is the one to get. I would have given it 5 stars if only they could get the price of ink down.

 "Fast But Noisy" 2010-06-08
By Iolanthe (NJ and GA)
I have bought a lot of HP printers in the past. This one is very fast but it is by far the noisiest while working. I would definitely not recommend it to anyone with a small home office. Yes, it is inexpensive. Yes, it is fast. But the noise will drive you crazy. In fact, I need to buy another printer for another home office I have and I will not order this printer for that. It is puzzling that with the improvement in technology over time that HP didn't produce a quieter machine.

The printer works good. It is a bit loud but that is not a big issue.

THe packaging the printer was delivered in was totally inadaquate. If HP had not packed the printer as well as they did it would have arrived in pieces. THe box was a good size but there was no padding aside from a single sheet of paper padding.

"HP is just like the car dealers" 2010-04-11
By Tax Doer (Baja Arcadia, CA USA)
My last new car came with a full tank of gas. Not so with this printer. They give you a training cartridge good for 1000 pages. No wonder HP is able to recycle cartridges equal in weight to 6 jumbo jets. All the talk about being green is somehow lost. No USB cable either. Luckily I had an extra one laying around. We saved a tree today because there is no instruction manual so I have yet to figure how to put the printer to sleep. Its another green thing

This was purchased to replace my HP 4L. I owned 2 in the last 15 years. I have high expectations for this printer based on that. The blasted thing is noisy like a small helecopter hovering. It is incredibly fast compared to the old 4Ls 30 ppm vs 4ppm. In all its a solid printer for the money I hope.

 "Great Printer, Great Price" 2010-06-11
By J. Shaw (San Francisco, CA)
I've used this printer for a few client projects now, and it hasn't disappointed. When working from home, this printer is a great home option that delivers excellent quality prints and photos. This is my first "investment" printer, and it is certainly a step up from my old HP all-in-one. Super easy installation for Mac users, as well. Just download the Snow Leopard drivers from the Epson site and five minutes later you're ready to go.

PROS: Excellent print quality, and stays pretty true to screen colors (not perfect, but as good as one can expect from a home computer). Easy installation, despite the other reviews (and I'm a technophobe, so if I can do it, anyone can!). Printing is very, very consistent when printing multiple copies. Excellent for graphics and photograph printing. This printer can also handle large sizes and different paper qualities, from photos to card stock to art papers.

CONS: None that I can think of, other than the inks do get expensive. As such, I would not recommend this printer for everyday stuff. The printer does not come with a cable, so you'll need to buy one if you don't already have one.

RECOMMENDATION: Use Epson papers with this printer---it does make a huge difference. If you use "normal" printing paper, you'll get disappointing results.

"No more Epson printers for me" 2010-06-06
By June Blue
I bought this printer for it's ability to print 13x19 and it's price range. While this printer is CAPABLE of printing a few beautiful pictures, it is a hassle to maintain and I have wasted much ink and paper trying to get quality prints from it. Espon designs products that require EPSON papers. I have beautiful Moab rag papers and other fine papers and no matter what, lines result in every print. This printer is decent for glossy papers MADE BY EPSON. But that is basically it's scope. If you want fine art prints this is not the printer for nice papers.

The ink is ridiculously expensive and if you want to print high quality prints you will need to replace the cartridges BEFORE they run out b/c once the inks are low, print quality is lost. Another 100 bucks.

I have also had problems getting this printer to read BRAND NEW INK Cartridges. Epson sent me 2 replacements, but this seems to be a common problem.

I think the trouble most printers cause is ridiculous in the industry. Who else could manufacture something that has so many problem!

My next printer will NOT be an Epson.

By Paul R. Hartung (Milwaukie, OR United States)
Unless you need the gloss enhancement of the 1900, this printer will exceed the price-to-performance expectations of discerning image makers. Combined with a CIS and good ink/paper (plus maybe a good printing software like Qimage), the 1400 will have you laughing all the way to the bank. This model is ideally suited for quality and economy, which is why there's plethora information available on how to convert these to continuous ink supplied versions on the web.

If you're in the market, don't hesitate because Epson will soon stop making them as they try to foil the aftermarket work-arounds that prevent them from bilking the general public with their ink prices. It's nice to buck the system and make great prints at a fraction of the cost. Jump in...

"If you like plastic junk, you're going to love this!" 2010-06-16
By G. Dorse (Brooklyn, NY)
So Epson thought it would be a good idea to make a printer out of the cheapest, flimsiest plastic possible. Trying to load paper? Forget about that. Get out a good old pen and paper and copy down that recipe for Vera Cruz guacamole instead. Trying to conserve paper? Also forget about that. Epson wants to make sure that there are no forests left by the year 2035, so they made sure to have their printers suck up about 5 pieces of paper at a time (if you were lucky enough to load the paper in the first place without breaking the loading tray or committing suicide.) Trying to print out a nice color photo of your dead body in a barren Redwoods National Forest with a bowl of guacamole in your cold limp hands? Once again, F.A.T. (forget about that). It's going to have to run a couple of tests first, waste all your ink, and then steal your identity and run off to Cabo with an HP, because in the end, Epson wants you to have as bad a day as possible. Thanks Epson!

By jvt (Houston, TX)
If all you print is black and white, it's fine. If you plan on printing color keep shopping. 29 ppm for color??? HAHAHAHAHA...what a joke. They must have tested this by printing out the phrase "this kodak sucks" in alternating black and gray letters. Printed a 13 page color brochure and it took over 5 minutes. Printed a test picture and our high res company logo and both turned out horrible. Tried different paper and different settings on the printer itself, same result each time. If you read the reviews and think to yourself, "it sounds ok...it can't be that bad" then you need to switch to your half glass empty self for the day because it is that bad. Don't let the price fool you, you get what you pay for.

 "Pretty happy so far" 2010-06-07
By Never pay retail (PUYALLUP, WA United States)
This was a snap to get up and running. I appreciated that I did not have to spend a half hour calibrating it like I did with my last printer.

What's hot: The pop up screen is a new and wondrous device to me. You can do many basic functions right from there without even launching the software on your computer. But actually, I love the software. I have used the Windows Live Photo Gallery from Vista and other printer's, scanner's or camera's software and it has always been a struggle to print a dang picture. This software made it really simple and I got just the output I wanted on the first try. I printed the same picture on the Kodak ESP 5250 and on my Canon iP4700. The Kodak picture had whiter whites, more true to life colors and was sharper overall and this test was done with generic photo paper. The pictures I printed on Kodak paper came out great because they apparently have some encoding on the back which communicates with the printer to insure a good print.

What's luke warm: The thing doesn't have a very solid feel to it. I thought something was going to break when I was snapping the ink cartridges into place. I have printed maybe 6 things so far and already had a misfeed. As one other review mentioned, the printed page drops right on top of the paper supply which seems to be a source of potential problems. It is much louder than my Canon, imagine a jet plane preparing for takeoff...

What's stone cold: The ink cost is touted to be cheap but I'd much prefer a 4 or 5 ink tank system so only the ink which was out would need to be replaced. I have never had all 3 colors get used at the same pace, have you? And why not include fax software now that that capability went by the wayside with Windows XP? The "help" section of the software even includes instructions on how to fax "If your All-in-One printer includes fax functionality". That's just plain mean! I don't need to be told about features I don't have and can't upgrade to!

On first appearances, I'm quite pleased with the value of this device. Time will tell about its durability and cost of operation. I've got my fingers crossed.

"My Celebrity Apprentice printer is finally here!" 2010-06-05
By Kaio (Santa Monica, CA)
I've been wanting one of these Kodak printers ever since I saw them featured on the Celebrity Apprentice a while back -- cheaper ink, more pages per cartridge, Kodak quality -- I was sold. But at the time, I'd recently bought a new HP printer and couldn't justify buying another printer so soon. HP normally makes great products, but I'd been having problems with their printer, and a horrible experience with tech support may have turned me off HP products for good (time will tell.) Point being, I've been itching to get rid of that thing and get one of these Kodak printers!

Enter Kodak 5250

No, this isn't the exact same printer featured on Celebrity Apprentice. But it's the same ink, and same company, so I was really excited to get this since it's been such a long time coming. I still vividly remember Gene Simmons being fired for being too arrogant to grasp Kodak's corporate direction (the guy is no Bret Michaels.) And I was looking forward to seeing if Kodak's technology lived up to the hype. Well, it does..... and it doesn't.

All In One???? Not Quite!

I thought that term was reserved exclusively for printers that do everything -- including fax -- which the 5250 does not do, so I don't think it quite deserves the "all-in-one" moniker. Many printer / scanners can also double as a fax, so I'm not sure why Kodak eliminated this feature. I believe it can still be done with 3rd party programs, but Kodak really should have implemented the option themselves if they want to call this an "all-in-one" printer. As it is, it's just an "almost-in-one."

Not So Great Paper Tray

The paper tray feeds paper just fine, but it also doubles as the catch tray for printed pages and the implementation is clumsy at best. As it is, printed pages just drop back onto the stack of unprinted paper. These's a little notch that's supposed to keep printed pages separate from the stack of unprinted paper, but the setup is problematic. Printed pages often drop to the floor, which isn't great for important documents, and a big problem for people with pets. I'm also wondering what would happen if I print a large document, say 100pgs. When all that weight pushes down on the unprinted paper in the tray, will they still feed ok?? The setup helps give the Kodak a low profile though. Just not sure it works the best.

Color Quality

Much as I hate to admit it (because I despise that printer) but my old HP prints colors more vividly than this Kodak. In general, the Kodak has a good range of color, but side by side comparisons with the HP reveal that Kodak's greens are muted and the overall color palate isn't as vibrant. I do also have a Kodak EasyShare printer for my camera and it uses a thermal printing process. I was curious to see how that EasyShare printed compared to this Kodak 5250, and indeed, the greens were muted there as well. So I guess that makes it a Kodak issue across the board.

Small Footprint

I love that this printer doesn't occupy much space. It looks good, is well made and the controls are well laid out and easy to use.

Easy Setup

Pretty much just plug and print. Installing the software was fast and easy, which is a huge plus since my old HP was so overbearing in that department. Contrarily, the Kodak doesn't install a bunch of useless programs that take over the OS, like HP does. Just a barebones setup with an equally small footprint inside your computer to match the small footprint of the printer itself.

Wireless Connectivity

WiFi setup was also a snap. I was up and running in less than 10min. The process is simple and straightforward, and should be easy even for those who have never worked with WiFi before.

Bottom Line -- there's definitely room for improvement in print color quality, but overall, this is a great printer. And the ink is cheap compared to HP. If cartridges last as long as they say, I'll remain happy with it. But I had to knock off a star for the muted colors and another for calling this an "all-in-one" when it's lacking a fax. If not for that, I could've finally thrown that crappy HP printer in the trash.

I have had this AIO for over 6 months. It has only had 1 paper tray jam and 1 fax feeder jam. The scan is unbelieveably long but good quality. Fax is very good but you have to manually set it to black each fax. The ink doesn't go as far as my cheap old HP 6122 printer. For whatever reason, it will lock up and not respond to touch pad or on/off button. It has to be unplugged and then go through it's noisy 3 minute recalibration. It is not a simple plug and play either. I had to transfer router settings via usb thumb drive. I don't see how it rates as high as it does for editors choice awards. Mabe they just read the company hype and didn't actually use it.

I bought the 8500 Wireless to go with my imac with Snow Leopard. They are not compatible. Here is a short list of the problems. The wireless installed flawlessly for the first week. Then it stopped working & I needed to connect them by cable - but wireless worked when I used my PC Netbook. It took 2 1/2 minutes to print ONE PAGE. Given that I was printing documents, it took all day. But you have to stand right next to the printer - you can't leave it because 1) you keep getting messages that you need to load paper when there's lots of paper in the tray - but you have to push "OK." So you have to be there. Then it stops every, say 6-8 pages, in order to "Check the device." That takes a minute, after which it stops in order to clean the printheads, after which it tells you to push OK when you put more paper in the tray, plus 1 1/2 minutes for the next page! That's why you have to stand over the damn thing. The print quality is very good, but not helpful with all these problems. Then there is ink cost. I have never had to spend so much money for ink. I printed out about 600 pages, a combination of text and pictures. I used up all 4 ink cartridges that came with the machine, plus 2 yellow, magenta, and cyan XL cartridges, and 1 black XL (not quite empty). I estimate that I spent over $250 for ink in order to print those pages, a far cry from the claims of HP. Now for those of you PC people who are grinning with satisfaction, get this. When any of the cartridges go empty - at least how HP defines empty - the whole machine shuts down - regardless of Mac or PC. Kaput! You are not allowed to print anything - no text, no copies, no faxes. Dead in the water. Right now my printer says I need a new Yellow, so I can't can't B&W copies! Kaput! You won't have some of the other problems like Snow Leopard Macs, but if you use this printer you will always have to have an extra supply of every cartridge available for when the printer shuts down. Others have already commented on HP support, so I won't. If I don't get satisfaction from HP - I still believe in Santa Clause - I'll give it away. It's of no use to me.

 "Wretched device" 2010-06-08
By Phoenix (Woodville, Mass)
One minute it works, next minute it doesn't. Sometimes it even stops printing in mid stream. Sometimes it works from one computer, sometimes the other. Takes itself 'offline' - 'disconnects' itself, and the HP support (I should have learned with the previous unit we had, when there was a problem, HP was useless). I've wasted hours with this infernal machine, even had to reinstall the software on each computer.

To be clear, this is the 'wireless' version - tho it's more like the 'worthless' version.

"Not as good as these reviews" 2010-05-28
By Orion L. Rogers (SATELLITE BEACH, FL, US)
My wife pushed for this printer, I wanted and wished I had bought the Lexmark. It worked fine for 3 weeks. It then somehow lost contact with my MacBook pro. I reloaded the supplied software at least 10 times. It is quite a job by the way. I tried to reload the software from the HP website at least 5 times. I went to online help. They tried but proved to be useless. I spent many hours back and forth with 4-5 different techs and nothing. Eventually they suggested that I nuke my hard drive and reload my operating system! Whaaaat?

Never will I fall into this trap again. Now the PC's that were working with it a little longer can no longer use it. It says paper jam and there is nothing anywhere in this printer. Extra ink carts I'll never use. What a waste of money. Don't buy this piece of junk.

"Good value, effective small office printer" 2010-05-23
By Jason Buberel (Sunnyvale, CA USA)
The printer was purchased for use in our small office of 10 users. I specifically purchased the version with a wired ethernet connection as I've found printing over WiFi to be much less reliable.

After several weeks of usage, I'm very happy with the purchase.

Setup: This went very smoothly after unpacking, attaching power and ethernet connections. The printer correctly configured an IP address using the DHCP server on our network. I then downloaded the 'Dirver only' install bundle directly from the HP driver/support website (never used the CD that came with the printer). HP supplies both MacOSX and Win7 (32 and 64 bit) drivers. All machine correctly identified the printer on the network and installed the driver correctly without hassle/error.

Scanning: We use the printer to scan business documents to PDF over the network. The sheet feeder combined with Nitro PDF Professional (PDF creation software) works perfectly for scanning long documents to PDF for archiving. This is an amazing time and labor saver.

Printing: Nothing spectacular, but then again we're just printing business documents not photos or glossy brochures. Printer speed if fine.

"great clear photos but jammed paper all the time" 2010-06-10
By Nicole (Los Angeles)
This printer prints beautiful photos. I got it because it could print on dvds (which I haven't tried yet), it has an auto-document feeder, is wireless, and can do double sided printing. Unfortunately, the paper the paper seems to get stuck more often than not trying to print. And the document feeder gets jammed as well. There is something about the way this printer spools the paper that if paper is not just so, it won't work and it will get jammed. It also doesn't hold very many sheets in the paper tray. The print quality seems very high and the scanner is good. It is also very simple to use and came with lots of software. The ink is expensive but it hasn't seemed to use it up terribly quickly,

 "Best Ever" 2010-06-08
By Lynne Peterson (Tucson, AZ United States)
This printer is by far the best printer we have ever owned. We can all use it, and it does an excellent job at everything it does. When you tell it to print it happens almost instantly, even with color. We can print on both sides of the paper and have many other options when it comes to printing. We haven't used the fax yet, but it is all set up and ready to go. Making copies is a snap.

We are just really impressed with everything this printer does, and how the finished product looks.

"Best printer I ever had" 2010-06-05
By Robert L. Page (LA, USA)
Fast, quiet, and I can see it and use it from all my computers. I could not find the scanner interface, I go in system preference. Once I get there it is great. I can lay out a bunch of small picture and so long as you don't put them to close together. The scanner will bracket them scan them separately and give them each a number with out you having to name them. I find it easy and fast. Ink usage so far seems good. Printing is fast and quiet. I use it to print disk labels. Much better disk tray, prints fast and quit.

I did not try the fax yet but it has to better than my old one that had a ribbon.Epson Artisan 810 Wireless Touchscreen Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA52201)

 "Found what i wanted" 2010-05-27
By L. Avalos
So we were searching printers to print on small type of cards. I look at the HP all in ones and the Canons, after talking to a few people they told me this would actually be the best for that...the drivers are easier and better than the HP and the quality would be better than the canon. So i bought it and so far its been great. Wireless integration is simple. I do have some knowledge of this stuff but i think most people could figure it out with just reading the step by step instructions. The printing is great and its fast...now i have only had this for about 3 weeks but i do like it. I'm not sure about the ink use yet...so far it doesn't seem bad.

"Great low price black and white printer" 2010-06-02
By Russell L. Casement (Wichita, Ks)
I'm a fan of Brother now. I've had no problems or issues with my new printer.

It's been a year now since I purchased the printer. I use it for envelopes and letters. I use the wireless feature to network all PC's to the centralized printer.

I would buy again based on features and price.

"Great printer, underwhelming customer service" 2010-05-25
By Stephen J. Swenson
Printer came as advertised. Had trouble setting up the wireless. Called customer service and got the usual menu of "did you do this..." and "did you do that...". An hour-and-half later she figured out that there really was a problem. She logged a trouble ticket and said that a tech representative would return my call within 4 hours. I changed plans to ensure that I could take the call. Nada. I called them back and was told that my ticket was misfiled and that a technical representative would be calling me back shortly. Out of frustration I put on my electrical engineer's hat and got it to work. In the American consumer's mad rush for lowest price/maximum gadgetry (over and against quality and customer service), companies are outsourcing technical support to the end user...offloading cost of error to the one paying the bills. It's a beautiful thing!

 "Yea laser printer!" 2010-05-09
By Christy (Portland, Oregon)
I needed help to get the wireless set up with everyone's laptop. Three of us use it with three different computers and it works great. We especially like the double sided feature, which was one of the reasons we bought this particular printer. I also like the paper feed option so that I can print on recyled paper.

"This is a great printer!" 2010-05-09
By J. D. Northcutt (Camden, SC United States)
I can only say good things about this printer. This is my second Brother Laser Duplex printer . I bought this one because my other printer, 10 years old & more than 40,000 pages printed, finally began to malfunction. The high yield toner cartridges ( Aprox 8000 pages) can be bought online for under thirty dollars. That is if you are willing to use compatible cartridges. That is what I have done for years with no problems whatsoever. I really love the wireless features on this new printer. It is nice to be able to print from our laptop and from anywhere in the house. I could not imagine going back to a printer that only prints on one side of the page. I certainly could not image going back to a printer that uses ink. Paying 25.00 for about 400 pages is very expensive .

"Excellent printer, easy wi-fi setup with a Mac" 2010-04-28
By Nicolas S. Martin (Indianapolis, IN United States)
It's difficult to find anything to criticize about this printer. The wi-fi setup is quite simple, at least with a Mac. The printer's footprint is concise and it isn't terribly noisy. It is fast and the print quality is very good. It's such a pleasure to have duplex printing. Highly recommended.
