"Electronics Novice:This was a replacement for my 13 year old HP printer" 2010-05-25
By Louie's Mom (Dallas)
I am NOT an expert on electronics so here is my review from the standpoint of an average consumer. I have a ThinkPad T61, a 2Wire wireless internet modem provide by ATT Uverse, and have Windows 7 as my laptop operating system. I decided I wanted a wireless printer that would also make the occasional copy for me, or scan something I wanted to email to someone, and started reading Amazon reviews. I quickly ruled out HP as I read that the quality has declined. That left Canon and Brother as reportedly high reliability brands. At first I wanted a color Canon printer because it's a small machine. Then I started reading reviews about how Canon color printers go through huge amounts of ink and thus cost a lot of money. I realized that I don't have to have a color printer, and the size of the machine isn't critical as I plan to keep it in a closet rather than on a desk. Before deciding on which printer to buy, I picked a firm from Angie's List to do the installation in my home. I sought some advice from one of their techs and he said has this Brother machine and is very happy with it.

The tech who came out had this machine running for me in less than 30 minutes. I tested it by using it to make a copy, printing from it, and scanning a newspaper article. Even though it only prints and copies black and white, it scans in color. The tech explained to me the various scanning options - "image" gives you an exact copy of whatever you scanned. But if I change the setting to "OCR" I get a TEXT document that I can edit. To scan you can either use the feeder, or open the top and lay the item on the glass. The hinges for the lid are made in such a way that you can lift the lid straight up to place a book on the glass if you need to do so for scanning or copying. The tech set the machine to save all my scans in one folder and then he put a shortcut to that folder on my desktop. My only issue is that if I scan two pages the machine generates two files - instead of one file with 2 pages in it.

When I do an image scan I get a jpg which I think anyone can open. I don't have Adobe writer, so I don't know if you can set the machine to create a pdf. Right now my laptop software includes Microsoft Office 7 with Word, Excel and Powerpoint. However, I have used a free software called OpenOffice and imagine it would work just as well as the Microsoft office product. I understand there are also free programs that create and read pdfs.

The only negative I have noticed is that the machine is somewhat slow in printing and scanning. However, that is compared to the $10,000+ machines I have used in offices where I have worked over the last few years. For under $300, I feel that this is an excellent machine. If I have any problems with it (I've been using it for less than a week now) I will amend this review.

 "Do not buy!!!" 2010-05-11
By K. Pliego (socal)
We had this printer for 2 months and exactly one day after the return period expired it started acting up, eating paper, spilling toner, getting stuck all the time, and overall malfunctioning. The return policy for Amazon sucks so we could not send it back. We are now stuck with a useless printer and an office that desperately needs it. What a waste of money. I thought I had done my homework when shopping and the reviews were not bad so I thought I was making a good purchase. I don't know what to do anymore.

I would not recommend anybody buy this printer, I have had other brands like HP and Canon and they have never had this happen. I would have spent $30-$50 more on one of those and probably would have had no problems.

And Amazon sucks! I don't understand why I cannot return a defective product.

 "Lovely wireless printer" 2010-05-09
By Wu Hu
I bought this printer about 1 year. It was a network printer working close to my router with an eternet cable. Now I have to make it working wirelssly. I followed the instructions on the manual along with the set up wizard on the CD to configure the connection. After many attempts, it did not work but a window poped out informing that all the connections were failed.

Fortunately, my friend is familiar with network setting. First he reset the printer, set it in wlan mode, assigned an IP address in "static" mode and did the encryption connection with router. On my laptop, add a new local printer instead of network printer, connect to the printer with IP address previously assigned to the printer and finished the rest. Now we can use the printer wirelessly. The point is to treat it as a local printer and the router as a print server.

Too bad, this trick is not on the manual. I believe that the set up wizard on the CD doest not help most of the printer owners. I wrote this review for all the other owners who may need to go wirelessly.

"Easy wireless network setup -- great for Macs!" 2010-05-06
By ple (seattle, wa)
I've got a complicated wireless set-up at home and was looking for a multifunction printer to fit seamlessly into our network. This Brother printer turned out to be a life-saver. I was skeptical at first, having tried unsuccessfully to set up several older HP printers on our wireless network using Apple Airport Extreme. Often, I could get the printer to work fine, but not the scanner or fax -- or vice versa; or I had to download some drivers that did or did not work. There were lots of kinks and we finally gave up on the wireless printing until we read reviews about this printer.

In a short amount of time, we were able hook up our PC desktop and two Macs (Pro and Powerbook) laptops to the printer using Airport Airport Extreme. We can now print wirelessly without problems, make copies, and scan from our the printer directly onto our laptop folder. So much better than anything we've experienced before using the Airport Extreme.

Setting up the printer was fairly straightforward though we ran into a glitch. But after a little Internet searching, I figured out that if I changed the security setting from WPA2 to WEP, the printer was able to recognize my wireless network. Once I did that, it worked like a charm.

For the price, this printer delivers excellent quality and great features; we print checks, invoices and deposit slips for a small business we run from home. The quality is good; I can't speak to how many copies it can run because we've only had it for a month now and the ink is still going strong.

 "NO MORE INK !" 2010-04-27
By B. MCCUE (Fairport NY)
What a Great Multi fuction copier/printer. Our family decided we didn't need a color laser printer. But it does scan in color. Dry toner, no more dried out ink cartridges. Our new linksys/cisco router has a quick setup button and the wireless printer found it with no problem. Our 3 laptops found the wireless printer easily. My hard wired to the router PC tower took a little bit longer to config. I just had to make sure I had the correct IP address of the printer. Fast warm up to print. Fast printing. Really quiet when its printing. Replacement Toner isn't expensive either.
