 "Great, except color quality" 2010-08-10
By Yooper (Minneapolis)
Alright, this machine was relatively cheap for what one gets: color, scanner, 11x17, wireless connection, etc. I can't complain too much, BUT if your concerned about color reproduction then go somewhere else. The color printed is somewhat washed out/faded from what's on the screen. I've been through all the software and hardware settings, as well as 2 calls to customer support (fairly useless each time) and it seems that is simply how this thing prints. Again, I suppose it's OK given the price, but still a bit of a bummer when other 5 year old ink jet printers print better colors. Oh well.

"Good for 11x17 printing; poor for color scans & duplex" 2010-08-09
By Geminica (Portland, OR)
I love that this scanner/printer is 11x17, and very affordable, and has wifi. All that is great. However it's been a big problem for us, because:

1. We were intending to manually fake duplex by running pages through a second time, and

2. I need to scan color drawings on off-white paper.

You cannot do manual duplex on this machine. It feeds multiple pages at once or it jams. I was trying to print my 20-page zine, and it's taken 4 hours already today due to slow print speeds, jams, multiple page feeds... a real pain. I have maybe 60 duplex sheets printed, and about 25 pages in the wastepaper bin.

Secondly, the color sensitivity in the scanner is poor. I do watercolor drawings on deeply cream-toned paper, and the paper scans as pure white - obviously this means all the actual watercolors get quite washed out as well. It works well for black and white, and *sometimes* for color - but I wouldn't recommend this scanner for artists.

The software is a bit limited as well; it's constantly trying to print to the wrong paper tray, hard to clear it when it gets stuck, and sometimes we can't figure out why it's still trying to go to tray 2 when we already told it to go to tray 1. More paper wasted.

In the end, I think this machine would be great for a lot of people, but don't touch it with a ten foot pole if you're trying to print comics or zines or if you scan color art.

 "Great Printer" 2010-07-23
By MDB
I think that this is the best printer I have ever owned. I've had it for less than a week but so far it has done everything I've asked of it flawlessly including wirelessly scanning!

I use the 11 X 17 for construction drawings frequently and now have the ability to scan them too from my home office! The print quality is great as well. I love the CC3 Control Center interface that Brother has for software. It works wonderfully and I am able to set up many custom functions for scanning easily. This software also didn't take a lot of time to install like the HP stuff I've had in the past and it didn't give me all sorts of other junk like HP always does. The software works fine on my machine (Dell Lattitude D620/Windows XP Pro.)

The set up was easy enough and didn't really take much time. In fact it took me longer to get the wireless log in info from my router than it did to set up the printer (about 20 minutes total)

This morning I printed several 4X6 photos of a projecct and they came out great. One of the only issues I'd suggest is a separate port to load photo paper as I had to pull out the 8.5 X 11 but I don't print that many pictures so I don't anticipate it being a problem.

I love the option of having 2 trays and keep the top loaded with 8.5 X 11 and the bottom with 11 X 17.

As far as the cost of ink goes it seems to be about the middle of the road. But I'll admit I don't really ever know how much ink is really in any of the cartridges for any brand ink anyhow.

I don't use the fax too much but I've been able to send and receive with no problems. Couldn't do that on my previous ones very well for some reason.

After years of struggling with previous all in ones I'm very pleased to have this one. I can now fully appreciate the productivity I've gained by not fussing with printer problems all day!

Thank You Brother. This is great!

 "Brother Reliability" 2010-07-15
By Michael D. Mcgough (Montgomery, AL)
Have had this product for almost two years. Has been very reliable. one misfeed since ownership. Fantastic to have ability to print 11 x 17. I use for printing 1/2 size architectural plans. Does very nice letter quality and can do reasonable photo printing. Buy with confidence.

"Best < $500.00 Color Tabloid MFC on the market" 2010-07-14
By In4mation
I generally don't take the time to post product reviews but I felt this machine was deserving. You'll notice I won't refer to it as a 'printer' because that would border on insulting. Printing is only one of the many things this unit is capable of. Not to mention the ability to scan, print & copy A3/LGR size paper, all in B&W or COLOR! Can your little printer do that?

Worth mentioning, after years of dealing with defective and poor quality products from a company that has the letters HP in their name, Brother has been a winner for me and everyone I recommended. Who also coincidentally asked me what to buy when their printer made by the above mentioned printer Co. died after only 6-12 months. My +10 year old Brother MFC-8200 B&W Laser is still fully functional and now sitting next to the new Brother MFC-6490. I simply grew tired of waiting for it to die and since it still works perfectly, I decided to keep it. Time will tell if the 6490 can print as many BOXES of paper as the 8200 has in the +10 years I've had it.

In summation, the term "Jack of all trades, master of none" nicely sums up an MFC machine and in particular, the MFC-6490CW. I believe Brother built this machine to fill a MUCH NEEDED gap in the small office segment. If that was their intention, I think they achieved their goal quite nicely at a very affordable price point. If someone locates a more capable A3/LGR Color MFC office machine anywhere close to this price point, PLEASE let us know!!!
