"Poor quality, frustrating to use, expensive ink." 2010-08-12
By Michelle A. (Longmont, CO USA)
The only positive thing about this printer is the price. Otherwise, I am quite disappointed with it.

As I expected, this printer shipped with starter ink cartridges. Well they're not kidding about having very little ink... the starter cartridges lasted a week, at best! Then, when we tried to get replacement cartridges, we of course found that the Epson brand cartridges were very expensive. So instead, we bought generic cartridges. They did not work - the printer threw errors. Putting in the original OEM cartridges fixed the errors, but of course, they were out of ink. We tried refilling the OEM cartridges and were told this was not possible with this type of cartridge. So with no other choice, we were forced to buy the expensive Epson brand cartridges.

Network installation was frustrating as you had to have the printer connected to the network in order to install the driver on the computer. This was a hassle for us because we were trying to configure laptops off-site and then deliver them to the employees. With other network printers, you can usually give the printer a static IP manually, install the driver separately on the computer, and then just point the computer to the printer's IP. But not in this case... it wouldn't even let us install the driver if the printer wasn't present! I presume the same would be the case for a USB local installation.

The document feeder can't seem to feed pages straight.

The scanner driver often just flat out stops working and needs to be reinstalled. I kept downloading the driver from Epson as needed but it happened so often (about once a month) that I finally just saved a copy of the driver on the desktop for easy re-installation.

Beyond that, I can't comment, as I am not the end user of the printer. I am just the IT tech so I'm telling you my experience. I am not impressed. The reports I have gotten from my end users also reflect the same sentiment. My suggestion is: Look for a different printer.

 "Good, but...." 2010-07-18

The PRICE is good for the Epson 310 Workforce printer, but...

1. It's noisy when it "grabs" the paper from the feeder tray

2. Maybe most people wouldn't care, but it's hard to figure out how to shut it off. The pilot light stays on. I have to unplug it to save a few pennies of electricity.

I have not hooked up the fax feature.

It gives FAST text prints and is good on color photographs.

"Espon good for the price but not exceptional" 2010-07-12
By C. S. May (Timonium, md United States)
I had purchased this because I needed a good basic printer with all the functions. I have a Mac and my hp printer didn't work great after the upgrade to Snow Leopard. I downgraded from a 300 dollar printer to a 60 dollar printer. Overall not bad. I have a few frustrations with some things printing severly slow and sometimes it prints fine. The menu is a little frustrating as it doesnt seem to always do what i am asking...it likes to keep asking questions back.

I would say a good basic printer. I did not purchase an HP because the c6180 i had was always calibrating or something to make noises constantly.

 "Poor document feeding" 2010-07-06
By Michael J Stelmack (Phoenix, MD United States)
I honestly think Epson tried to pack too much into this bargain printer. I was initially happy with it, but after a few weeks it's become clear that the product has difficulty with paper jams. It frequently (almost always) jams when using the automatic document feeder (the copier or scanner). It sometimes jams when printing from the paper source.

"Good price, good product, network friendly" 2010-05-29
By P. Stearns (CALIFORNIA, US)
I recently bought the Epson WorkForce 310 printer to replace an old HP All-in-One. I was motivated by the fact that I could get the new printer and ink for less than I could buy the ink for the old printer... and because of the network ability and sheet feeder for scanning. Over all the printer works great. It scans MUCH faster than my old HP PSC 1610. SOftware is good, too. My complaints are two-fold: The WorkForce 310 is noisy. When it starts to print it makes quite a a lot of noise. The other issue is print quality choices. There are only three settings. The middle, default setting produces beautiful text output but at a slightly higher resolution than I need in many cases. In the lowest quality setting, the machine prints quickly but the quality is not good enough. On the HP, draft setting produced laser quality output but used very little ink. On the Epson, Draft mode is fast and uses little ink but te quality isn't good enough. On middle setting, quality is great but it takes longer and uses a lot more ink. Because draft isn't good enough compared to the old HP, I will be forced to print at the default middle setting which will result in my using a lot more ink than before. That will result in higher operating costs. SUGGESTION to EPSON: add another option for print quality rather than just having three settings. Have a setting between the middle, default and the low quality draft setting so I can use less ink but still get readable output.
