"Great home network printer so far" 2010-08-04

I've had this printer for about two weeks, and we've been using it occasionally, about once a day. The print quality is so much better than I had expected. It seems to take about a minute for the first page to come out, so judge for yourself how important that is.

Setting it up on the network was very simple. I connected the printer's power and ethernet, let it do its initial automatic setup for a few minutes, and then gave it an IP address through the on-printer controls and it was ready. It was easy to set up on both Mac OSX Snow Leopard and Windows 7, with the drivers already included in each operating system. We did not try connecting via USB to either computer.

Toner replacement will be expensive, as with any color laser printer. But I compared prices of many printers, and after two or more full toner replacement cycles (at the current Amazon prices), this printer comes out to be less expensive to maintain than any other networked multi-OS printer. If price is your primary concern and you're only using Windows, then you may want one of Dell's offerings. But for a network that includes Macs, I like this HP.

"Great value for printer, easy to set up" 2010-07-01

I've set up hundreds of printers and this one was very easy to set up. Followed the simple 6-step instructions to remove all of the tape and unseal the toner. Powered it on and its network interface immediately got an IP from my DHCP server. Connected in to the IP with Firefox and changed it to a static IP. Next, installed the printer on my two computers running Fedora Linux 12 (set up an LPD printer using the static IP address of the printer), and I was up and running within 2 minutes (Linux doesn't need any driver CDs).

The printer is very easy to use, and the small LCD on the front is nice as it gives printer status. The prints are a little dark, but that can be adjusted later. The printer is pretty quiet, and the speed is definitely something I can live with considering the price.

All around, a very affordable color laser printer that does what it is supposed to do. Toner is quite expensive, so I am going to try a refill kit when the time comes. The web interface for the printer is fully featured and gives toner status, etc.

"Simple to use, no clogged nozzles, photo quality laser color" 2010-06-22
By HMMWV (santa clara, CA USA)
Normally when it comes to "photo" quality, inkjets have the edge, but with them come ink maintenance issues, printheads that clog or print white lines, and very expensive ink ($1/ml). Inkjets are a bit of a hassle but the quality can be spectacular.

When I did the demo in the office supply store on the 1518ni I was just blown away buy the photographic quality print on normal office paper. I had never seen such quality on a laser which usually has scan lines from the rotating laser head. I read up a bit about HP's new "color sphere" toner which is the trick to making the whole system work. The tonerparticles are much smaller than previous color toners allowing the print engine to mix 1, 2, or 3 of one color along with numerous specs of toner from the other cartridges before heading to the fuser. This gave the quality which was more than adequate for proofing, and could even be used on high grade paper for prints. HP kept is simple on this product as well - there is a pull out drawer with the 4 toner cartridges (don't forget to peal off the seal on the toner or else nothing prints at all - there is a green tab you snap then pull out twice the width of the cartridge in sealing tape which has become a much cleaner process than previous toner loading.

There is a down side - I paid $130 for the printer on sale which included the card readers, usb memory card reader, lcd display, and wired networking which I consider a good value. The fact that I can use it from any CPU in the buildings is a definite win. BUT- When the time comes to replace the printer cartridges (4 remember) at 80 bucks a pop, its $320 to print roughly 2000 sheets. As a result I kept my laserjet monochrome printer for documents and only use the 1518ni printer when I want a quick print to show someone or to make a quick color document for a customer.

And, as usual, HP gives you "starter" toner cartridges so your $320 investment will come sooner rather than later. Beware of these $50 cartridges being sold as compatible also - they are much larger particle size and will not generate the spectacular color the genuine HP products will. Sometimes HP has a sale on all 4 toners at once so you can watch hp.com for their pricing, and also sign up for their newsletter on ink and toner specials.

For the price I paid I was very impressed with the quality and simplicity of use. I also have HP inkjet printers but every time I go to unclog the supplies I walk away with pink, yellow, blue, and of course black fingers. This printer stays on my network in its energy star mode ready to print on a moments notice, Speed is impressive as well. If HP ditched the whole "starter cartridge" concept I'd be alot happier camper, but again the price was right.

"Great, except for toner cost" 2010-04-06
By Thomas R. Odell (Long Beach, CA USA)
This printer does a fantastic job, but expect to pay several times more for the toner than the cost of the printer. In fact I suspect that HP doesn't make any money on the sale of these printers, instead they make huge profits on the toner cartridges that this printer is designed to use up quickly.

And don't try to save money by buying a "compatible" cartridge. I tried this, and even though it looked identical to the HP version and fit in the printer fine, it would not work. Apparently there are electronics in the cartridges that identify it as a genuine HP product. If you put in a compatible cartridge, the printer says it can not read the capacity of the toner and will not allow you to print.

Another thing, this printer reads the cartridges to determine when they need to be replaced. As soon as you get to a few pages left, the printer will not allow you to print any more, even though the last prints look perfect. I believe these cartridges have plenty of ink left in them. Why can't I print until I see the prints go down in quality?

Even if you do just a moderate amount of printing you will have to change the cartridges at least once a year. A complete set of cartridges cost about the same as the printer did in the first place.

 "Love this printer!" 2010-03-23
By Dana Robertson (Long Beach, CA)
This is a great printer, I have replaced two previous printers in two of my restaurants with this printer. The only hiccup is it will NOT print unless all the toners are NOT empty. If you only wanted to print in b/w you can't unless all the C,Y,M,K are available which I think is dumb.

Other than that I LOVE the prints and it has been a great printer.
