DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER!!! I have had this printer for 6 months and have already had to replace all the toner and the drum units but have only had less than 1000 prints!! This is not covered under warranty, I cannot return the product and I have already spent more in supplies than I did for the printer. Called brother for help, got redirected 3 times and then they sent me what was in the user manual. Useless customer service...even more useless product. DO NOT BUY!!!

I purchased this printer a few weeks ago, and I love it! My eyes teared up a little when I saw the demo test page because it is SO nice to finally have a printer that actually does what it is supposed to.



If you need something really really fancy, I don't know how this printer compares to really really fancy printers, BUT, for my home office, this printer is absolutely perfect.



It was VERY easy to set up this printer. The instructions that come with it are totally clear, and everything is straightforward. The diagrams and pictures make sense. It's the kind of thing where you skip steps here and there (because they are just common sense) but if you have any question or confusion, you can look at the instructions and you immediately understand. (Setup was slightly different for our PC and mac, but the instructions cover both types, and both were very easy.)



I didn't have a USB 2.0 cable anymore (whoops!), so I had to go buy one, because that doesn't come in the box.



Everything since setup has been a dream--we press print and it asks the things that printers are supposed to (like about size and DPI, etc), and then it PRINTS! (Our old printer used to be such a pain--it would gray out some options that I wanted sometimes, and it would pop up a bunch of boxes on my screen about ordering Lex***k stuff and registering (again!), and then it took forever to print and needed to realign all the time...none of that nonsense with our new Brother, though!)



I think the quality of the pages I've printed has been exceptional. The printer seems to go to sleep pretty quickly when I am not using it, but as soon as I am ready to print, it wakes right up and gets down to business. The printer prints quickly--it says 17 pages per minute. Now, I haven't counted how many pages per minute I actually get, but each page only takes a few seconds, so that has been quite convenient.



I don't really have anything negative to say about this printer. The features I most wish it had are:

- scan/copy (but obviously I knew it didn't do that when I bought it, and I much prefer this printer that PRINTS over the old "printer" that could scan/copy all right but did not print very well...)

- wireless printing (would be nice, but it's not a big deal, and they make them with wireless; you just have to pay more.)

- duplexing. (Oh well.)



My favorite features are:

- (nice) color printing!

- mac compatible!

- prints quickly!



In conclusion, I highly recommend this printer (especially for homes and small businesses)! It does what it is supposed to. For my small business it has been great so far, as it creates very professional looking documents.

My first review was eaten by Amazon for some reason, reposting.



The print quality is quite nice and it prints quickly on 8.5x11 paper. Everything else about this printer is a nightmare of poor usability. Let's list the problems:

-- toner doesn't last very long

-- low toner message on computer doesn't tell you which one is low.

-- they don't make clear that you need to buy drums in addition to toner, just not as often.

-- printing costs are very expensive when you factor in toner and drums

-- display is old technology and is hard if not impossible to read unless you are looking at it head on in direct light

-- display is limited to one slowly scrolling line

-- when one toner gets low, printing just stops. Doesn't print faded, doesn't print bxw if color toner is out, it just up and totally quits.

-- menu of paper sizes is weird and doesn't include 4x6 or 5x8. List doesn't include the sizes, you have to look at the help for that.

-- single sheet feeder is needed for most non 8.5x11 sizes

-- single sheet feeder is prone to jams

-- paper path is complex, would be tough on thick paper, I think

I was on the market for a MacOSX compatible, network color printer and the Brother HL-3040CN was on a Clearance Sale at Staples for only $99.50. At that price I snapped it up. It is a nice printer so far. The software install and setup as a network printer was amazingly quick and easy. I like the idea of the toner on the printed pages not being water soluble. Toner cartridges were over $78 at Staples so I ordered a replacement Brother TN210BK toner cartridge from Amazon for approx. $48. The only feature I would add to this printer is the convenience of Auto Duplex printing. I will not miss the constant clogging of the printhead on the older color inkjet printer that this printer is a replacement for.

I bought this printer for home use. I don't print often--just coupons or shipping labels or word documents mostly. I don't do any fancy printing jobs or photos so I can't comment on how it does with those. I wanted something that the ink wouldn't dry up in a few months and the Brother laser printer seemed like a good choice. So far, it has worked great. It is attached to my home network through ethernet, I turn it on when I want to print and off when I am done. Warm-up time is really quick and print quality is a-okay. Initially, it smelled slightly of burning or ink dust (I wasn't really sure which) but that has faded over the past few months. I am quite pleased with my printer.

 "Far Better than HP" 2010-08-28

I purchased an HP Laser Jet MFC printer, HP LaserJet CM1312nfi CC431A MFC. The HP printer had to be replaced within 1 month of purchase due to surge protector problem then it was replaced again when it started printing a straight dark line on each page. Again the product had to be replaced. To make matters worst, the color cartridges started to leak the powdere in the ink onto the printer. My problems were further aggravated by the printer making a rumbling noise which indicated that more problems were down the road. I evaluated whether to replace the color ink cartridges which sells for $250.00 or buy the Brother MFC. I am happy to report, I purchased the Brother MFC. This is a great printer. The ink cartridges are not as expenses as HP (HP Laserjet cartridges, black sell for 79.00 whereas Brother is $49.0). One of my favorite feature is the ink saver printer mode which prints great drafts. This is a great investment and I should have done my research prior to spending $400.00 on an HP printer that barely lasted a year.

We now own two of these machines, I liked the home one so much I bought one for work. They do it all--print, copy and fax in black and white and in color, scan as images or text to the computer, and do it fast, quietly, and well. Compared to our old printer, which did just that and no more, or our old copier which jammed every second paper, this machine is awesome. The print quality is excellent, laser quality and although we haven't had to replace toner yet, I am pretty sure the cost is lower than many others.

I own a small business and purchased the MFC-9120CN from Amazon.com about 6 months ago. I use both the scan and color print features several times per week, however I do not use the fax functionality. I am very satisfied with the ease of use and print quality of this machine. Scanning is extremely easy. You can scan multiple pages at one time and the quality of the scanned image is exceptional. The scans can be downloaded to a folder on your hard drive or attached to an e-mail without any extra steps.



The print quality is good enough for me to produce proposal materials and have the finished product look very professional. For a small business, the speed and noise levels are very acceptable.



If there is anything that is frustrating, it is the cost of the toner. However, I don't think that has anything to do with this machine. I just think toner is too expensive, period. I will probably go through about $400 of toner on an annual basis, with moderate use. In other words, I don't use this machine for mass mailings, but I do print about 40 invoices per month and another few hundred color prints per month for proposals and other random copies.



The copier function is adequate, as well. However, there is a decrease in quality from the original to the copy. Again, that is not unique to this printer, but it is noticeable.



Overall, it's worked like a champ and I would recommend it to someone in a situation similar to mine.

I bought this Brother printer to replace an HP 2840 color laser. I like the Brother. It's smaller and quieter. It doesn't have to calibrate a couple times a day either. Scans are way faster than the HP and the scan quality if far better than the HP. Copies and printing are great, as expected. I don't ever fax so I can't address it's capabilities there.



I found one limitation with this printer that prevented me from giving it five stars. The printer can only be used as a network printer attached to the router via an Ethernet cable or it can be a workstation printer supporting one PC attached via a USB cable. If your using Windows networking to share the printer (i.e. it's connected to one PC via USB and enabled for print sharing), it's not supported. What? You got it. Brother won't let you share the printer other than to have it setup as a network printer attached to the router.



This is an issue if, like me, the router is nowhere near the printer and you want to do a lot of scanning using the PC based utilities vs. the little screen on the printer. You can scan with it as a network printer but you can only do it using the function keys on the printer itself. You lose the benefits of the PC software based approach. If you do any volume of scanning, you want the PC utilities enabled.



I was able to work around the problem and get it working like I wanted but it took a couple days working on and off to sort out. I called Brother technical support. They kindly told me the printer doesn't support what I wanted to do and I should return the product. What? Unbelievable!!



To get it to work as a shared USB attached printer, you have to go through the CD install process on each PC. That's okay once you understand that's the process.



The only remaining limitation is quickly setting up a temporary shared user. Say your brother-in-law is in town for the weekend and needs to print. He can't use the Windows "Add a printer" function and get to your Brother printer. You have to go find the CD and do a full install for your brother-in-law to print his Mapquest directions home. It's not a huge problem but Brother should not have designed it this way.

Exactly as described. Setup was simple and straight-forward. It is a bit loud when it's starting up, but once it goes back to sleep, it's quiet again. For an office use this would be no problem. If you did a *lot* of printing at home, the noise might be a bit bothersome. But otherwise, this appears to be a great product.

I special order this Brother MFC-9320cw from Amazone.com. I like most about everything including features, functions and the price is fine. The worse feature about this printer is the manual feed. It offers just only one page at a time and you still have to hold that sheet of paper straight and constanly jam. It took me almost 2 hours to print 30 sheets of card stock. If you are looking to print card stocks and manual feed this is 100% not a good choice for you to buy.....

It systemically gives notice of a false jam that requires you to pull out all four color printer cartridges when you try to do a feed. I have read this is a general problem. You have to let it "catch" the envelope to avoid it, but that only avoids it about 70% of the time. What royal crap. The feed "tray" is about an inch and a half. The whole unit is slow as molasses. Piece of crap, piece of crap. I think they mostly finish the unit, make sure it looks nice and selling it knowing full well it's got functional defects. And they think they'll just sell enough and get away with it. It's grounds for a recall, geez. But they don't do that unless it's a safety issue. How about safety of the unit, because I'm about to beat it into poker chips with a baseball bat.

My wife had had a printer/copier/reducer/enlarger before but three years ago, it finally bit the dust. We had moved and retired, so settled into the HP printer mode, which was depressing. Recently she mentioned wanting a reducer/enlarger again, so I did some research and found this printer highly recommended. We found the best price on Amazon and got it. On the pro side, it does everything we/she wants and more, and either on our home wired or wireless network. The only con was the setup - if you use encryption on your wireless network, I found it can only be the simple form of WEP and not WEP2, etc. Other than that, it is a dream.

First one came DOA, (after a couple thousand miles of shipping, from factory, to warehouse, to store, to customer) its bound to happen, (ex truck driver, definitely Karma) called Brother and they sent out a NEW one 3 days later. I'm guessing i got a NEW one because it was only 15 minutes old, probably would have got a refurbished had it been older or had to drive an hour to their shop to keep the old one. Support (North American) was great and had all the info for trouble shooting on hand. Only took a minute or two, in the afternoon, to talk to a human.

Works great on my older PPC Macs (10.4.x & 10.5.x). Software even worked right off the CD, rare for a Mac. All the updates are on their Web site. The firmware update DID work wirelessly.

Pretty much what every one else says. Great color, fast in B/W even in "fine" color, etc.

Easy networking, if you already have a wireless network just enter your SSID and Password and that's it. Took me all of a minute to set up the wireless only because I didn't realize I was done. If your starting a Wireless network from scratch then you should setup your computer and wireless router first then connect the printer as above. Its a lot easier to look at a 20" monitor and use a mouse then to look at a 1" LCD and use buttons. The included software enables you to also connect to the printer itself in either a web browser or their application. Great for fine tuning or changing settings after your connected.

For those that have problems with the envelope feeder from "heck", just do as Brother says, push the envelope in till it stops -AND- wait for it to grab it. It only moves about 1/8 inch, you barely notice, it takes a few seconds, then send the print job. Worked every time for me. (don't forget to open the rear door) If it gives the fake "Paper Jam" error then just remove the envelope and raise the lid for 3 or 4 seconds then close it and start over. Also, don't forget to close the rear door AFTER your done as the standard paper will come out the back instead. The envelopes are a bit "smooshed" and a little wrinkled on mine. Not too bad but noticeable. Even on "Thick Envelope" setting.(I'll just blame it on the Post Office if any one asks) Unless you have "Laser compatible" envelopes you will have to open the flap on the envelope immediately after it comes out as it will seal itself if you don't. At least on my generic cheapo's it does.

On some of the other reviews people have said the Toner cost's too much, I'm not sure why they said that as they average about $50.00 (US) each.Brother TN210BK - Toner cartridge - 1 x black - 2200 pages That's about half what some of the higher printers go for. Altho I have seen them for $70+ each, but then I've seen this same printer go for $650+. -Shop around-. Even the drums come in a -four- pack for around $100.Brother DR210CL - Drum kit - 1 - 15000 pages The Toner's -average- life is 1200 to 2500 pages and the Drums have a life of 15,000 pages. The Toner and Drum "unit" is a two piece affair. When the Toner is out you just buy the Toner, unsnap the old one and snap in the new one. I guess they are looking at the "Dual Packs" with the Toner AND the Drums packaged together. Not needed and a waste of money. If the Lasers are anything like Inkjets when using color, then one color will be used up a lot faster then the other colors, the other colors may not be needed for days, weeks or months. I was so tired of having to change an "all colors in one" inkjet cartridge when it show almost half full of another color. Refilled them myself after that.

For those that only got a couple hundred pages on a new Toner cartridge, try --gently-- shaking them when they are new to loosen up the powder, when they sit for weeks or months on store shelves they tend to settle into chunks and that will break them up and level it out a bit. (I'm not sure how sealed they are after you take the protective cover off, so use a cover on the counter and old clothes just in case). If you really want to use every gram of Toner then just Yahoo/Google -fixyourownprinter- . Use at your own risk.

 "The Brother HL-3070CW has an odd but serious defect" 2010-07-20

This Brother printer would not work. I went to the Brother website, which advised me I could make it work by using it without a surge protector. I would have to use it plugged directly into the wall outlet. I returned the printer to Staples.



Brother obviously knows about this defect but continues to sell the product with the defect. Brother obviously doesn't care about the inconvenience to a consumer who may have to struggle to get a bulky, heavy printer transported, unpacked, and set up, researched, and then back to the store. I'll be looking only at other brands now.

 "Printing on cardstock is slow and painful." 2010-06-04

I am printing on Kromecoat 12 pt. glossy cardstock. Cardstock will not feed from the normal paper tray and must be fed from the manual feed tray. You must feed the cardstock one piece at a time. This process is very slow and requires constant human interaction. I calculated the maximum print speed with letter-size cardstock at 3 or 4 sheets per minute, not the 17 pages per minute advertised. The other big problem is that my cardstock comes out with a pronounced curl. I am currently letting my printed sheets rest under several reams of paper in the hope that the curl will be straightened out in a few days. You would not expect this curling problem in a machine that is advertised as having a straight-through paper path. But it does. Also, the rear paper exit option that is supposed to allow for a straighter paper path seems goofy. The cardstock feeds fine regardless of which exit you use. For me, using the rear exit just means I have to reach farther over the machine to get my print-outs. This printer is not really designed to work well with cardstock. Even the manual paper tray that you are supposed to use with cardstock is a bit of a joke. The "tray" with the paper guides is only about two-inches wide, meaning that it is not really long enough to make sure that paper or cardstock is aligned properly as it enters the machine. To make matters worse, the paper guides built into the tray have a tendency to slide back and forth so you have to constantly reset them, and try to hold them in place with your fingers as you feed the paper into the machine. I finally taped the paper guides where I want them with scotch tape. When you feed cardstock, you should put slight pressure on the cardstock to help it out as it is drawn in by the printer. Also, you need to be careful about your timing if you are feeding multiple sheets into the machine. If you are too fast with your feeding, the machine will think a paper jam has occurred, and you will have to withdraw the cardstock, open the top of the printer, and then close the top of the printer to get the print job back on track. The good news is that real print jams have yet to occur while using the manual feed slot. The only reason I gave this printer three stars is that the print quality is good, the price is reasonable, the machine is quiet, and easy to set up. I only started using this printer yesterday. I expect the cost of toner could be a problem because the toner cartridges seem quite small. Each cartridge has its own built in drum, so these are probably quite pricey. But I am hoping that I will be able to refill the cartridges in order to save money. We will see. If refilling proves problematic, then operating this machine long-term could prove too costly for me, especially given the hassles of printing on cardstock.

I had read a so-so review for this printer online so my expectations were low when it arrived. But when I printed the color demo sheet after setting the printer up, my doubts vanished. It prints color very well and the text is sharp and clear.



I also use an Epson all-in-one ink-jet printer in my home office, and the Brother laser printer is definitely a better printer. However, it isn't always tremendously better; unless you were holding print samples from both printers in each hand to compare them, you might not notice the difference when printing text-heavy or grayscale pages.



I'm a graphic designer and illustrator, so having that extra bit of quality is important to me. If you're just printing black-and-white text all the time, however, a less-expensive multifunction ink jet with a scanner included might be the way to go.



The cartridges for this Brother printer are pricey, but that comes with laser printers from all manufacturers. All in all, I'm happy with this printer.

 "HERE'S HOW TO FIX THE TONER "OUT" PROBLEM" 2010-05-01

My problem is that I printed a few hundred pages and then the printer reported IT WAS OUT OF TONER. WTF? The "starter" toner was supposed to be at least a few thousand pages.



I made the mistake of buying a new black toner cartridge. Then after it printed a few pages, it said the magenta cartridge was out of toner! I was trying to print black! This printer has a serious problem of not knowing when or if the toner cartidges is either out of, or completely full of toner.



After I found this trick, I got another 1,000 pages out of that "empty" toner cartridge.



Here's how to fix the problem (quoted from someone else but it really works... you can Google this problem and it will say to put electical tape on the sensor, but that does NOT NOT NOT work with this printer. Only this will work):



Toner Reset Menu for Brother HL3070:

1. Open Cover where you access toner cartridges

2. Press CANCEL & SECURE PRINT buttons at one time and you'll see the toner menus on screen

3. Press + or - to navigate through to the toners you need to reset. Hit "Y" to reset the toner. Scroll through and repeat for each toner color as necessary.

4. Hit OK button when prompted.



Reset menu for the durable parts counters:

1. Open cover where you access toners

2. Press GO and + button at once, you'll see menu come up displaying reset counters for drum, fuser, etc.



Brother SUCKS for trying to make you buy a new toner cartridge when there is absolutely nothing wrong with the one you have. And then trying to hide this information from you. I won't buy from this manufacturer EVER AGAIN.

get it to suck the paper in and as for trying to print on the back side of a piece of paper that has already run through the machine FORGET IT! I also am having a hard time finding specialty papers for it. I ended up having to by lazer photo paper on line because no one carries it in the stores.

This review is to respond to the review that says you can't do duplex copying with this machine. That is incorrect. It does do duplex copying and printing, you just have to figure out how to use the menu screens. To duplex copy: Hit the duplex button, hit the down arrow button to select which type of duplex copying you want (left to right or top to bottom) and then hit ok. This is a great machine. Flawless performance so far.

I run a solo law office and have used a Brother MFC-8500 multi-function laser printer for years. When looking for a replacement, I sought out another Brother product, because of my experience with the Brother products reliability and, with a high performance toner cartridge, extremely cheap operation. I sought reviews for multi-function laser from CNET and other sources and ultimately found a good deal on a DCP-8080DN on Amazon.com. It is a laser unit that also copies and scans. It does not fax, which the MFC-8500 could, but I scan everything to Adobe PDF files and then fax by email, so this loss was of little consequence to me.



But, the unit did a number of things well. Printing seems to be consistently good, although, if the unit rests over a weekend, the lines of my stationary template print with some fuzziness. Scanning is easy, but the quality of the saved PDF or OCR files is less good than the MFC-8500.



Some difficulties are obvious in the printer's design. The printer is shipped with a single paper tray and an open adjustable front door through which manual printing can be fed; but, one must be careful to drop down the back door of the printer, and lock down two tabs to have envelopes and postage feed through to the rear of the printer without crinkling. This is especially maddening when dealing with [...] postage sheets and stationary envelopes, which, if the tabs are not adjusted properly and the back door not open, the media follows the drum around to feed the printed matter to the bay in front, crinkling both to an unusable state.



Further, although crinkled envelopes and postage might survive a single pass through to the rear window if properly set, neither will survive the drum. And, worse, if you use windowed envelopes, the plastic will melt and the envelope will wrinkle no matter what you do.



As a concession to trying to do too many things, the way the printer is designed forced me to place it in a nook in my credenza sideways, because getting to the rear pass through outlet (for envelopes or postage after dropping the window and pushing the tabs down) is simply too inconvenient not to be right there for for you to do. I mail 25-50 parcels a day and, even with trying to do this once a day, it is a trial that I am working to adjust my habits to address.



A second difficulty is the half-assed promise that this is a "duplex" machine. Well, it does print duplex if you adjust the driver. But, if you wish to copy a two sided document, it does not rotate the paper and read both sides to print 2 sides to 2 sides. It does reduce two single sided pages to 2 sides of a single page fine, though. And, it does not scan to duplex at all. I may be simply not getting the instructions, not for the first time, but there does not seem to be an option for this on either the LCD screen on the printer or in the driver.



A last couple of grievances, and minor ones are, first, the initial print product after the printer is dormant for a day or two. My stationary template has lined border created in Microsoft publisher. Usually this prints clearly, but after a weekend, I have to run three or four pages to clear up the laser fuzzies, tnen it runs fine. Second, this is a noisy unit. After the relatively quiet performance of the MFC-8500, the clash of plastic parts was a bit of a shock. I quickly got used to it; and, as it did not affect the performance, I got over it.



I print between 200-400 pages a day and both units I purchased for home and work, produce as or better than expected, with the exception of the nuisance troubles I mention above. Unlike other scanners, it easily can be commanded to scan over a network. It is an ideal machine for someone like me, that needs moderate production at extremely low cost, both in initial investment and in operating costs.



If you are willing to accept the compromises that were necessarily built into the design of this product, and realize that you cannot get a thousand dollar product for $299.00, you, like me, will be satisfied with your purchase.



The good: fast printing, scanning, and consistent operation.



The bad: manhandling of envelopes, postage sheets, and any pass-through printing; limited duplex utility; fuzzy printing after long periods of disuse; noisy operation



Conclusion: Good, not great unit, worth the price, utilitarian device for a moderately busy office or home.

Brother is just dominant in this segment of the market. For the price of a personal laser, this printer can handle all the printing/scanning needs for a small business of up to 20 people. We have it in our home office (just two of us, but one does a lot of printing) and I LOVE not having to buy toner every few weeks. We bought from someone other than Amazon, but now Amazon's price is very good.



Pros:



-- Most economical work group/small business printer in the universe -- toner cartridge that handles 8000 copies is about $80 -- that's one cent per page!

-- Very good build quality, feels and sounds like industrial strength materials.

-- Great performance -- 30 ppm. Relatively fast first page time. Good solid (though not fast) duplexing. Reliable paper handling.

-- Network drivers are very good, very stable. We have installed on XP, Vista and Win 7 and everything -- printing and scanning -- just works.

-- Sheet fed scanner works well -- you can feed it 50 page stacks of paper and it will scan or copy very rapidly. Software supports scanning direct to multipage PDF. (After 3 months -- printer and drivers have continued to perform extremely well -- no hassles at all)

-- Energy features are great. Printer goes to sleep and consumes just a few watts, but it also wakes up fast. So you don't have to switch it on and off.



Cons:



-- (Not really a problem, but just a limitation) -- the 8080 does NOT scan double sided documents (full duplex). You need to spend an extra $75 for the model 8085 for duplex scanning. However you can scan single sided documents and print them double sided (i.e. duplex printing).

-- Rather bulky for a desktop. Much bigger than consumer lasers.

-- This duplexer is not fast enough for really high volumes -- you need to spend some real money to get that. But the machine is sure-handed so you can hand it a big duplexing/collating job and let it chunk away at it for a few minutes and come back without worrying about misfeeds. We've have one misfeed in three months.

I bought this to replace my 7 year-old Samsung printer and my Canon flatbed scanner. I'm glad I did! The duplex printing is extremely fast and convenient. I can print a 20 page document within 2 minutes of plugging in my printer and clicking the print button. It warms up almost instantly and goes back to sleep after a reasonable time. The scanner includes both a bed scanner and a feed scanner. There is no duplex scanning, and the drivers that are included for use with Mac OSX are buggy; however, it's easy to use Preview for scanning. The unit it large, but it can store a lot of paper at once. I use it for school, but this equipment would be at home in a small office or workgroup.
