"OK printer, scanning software stopped working" 2010-09-29
By Dusty (Joliet, IL)
OK but slightly blurry printing like most ink jets. Would have been an acceptable unit if the scanning software didn't stop working. Tried to download the patch but my computer went into an endless install loop (each must be cancelled and software won't install). Don't know if this is a Vista only problem. Thought that HP would have been able to correct the issue after six months but maybe they moved on. They must not want to keep making tons of $ on the cartridges.

"Consumes an enormous amount of inks; annoying frequent automatic updates." 2010-09-23
By Po Po
This is the worst printer I've ever had, although I formerly loved my previous HP printers. It consumes an enormous amount of inks, so the cartridges run out very quickly and it is expensive printing everyday items. I used to love making greeting cards, but no longer bother because it wastes too much ink. My former printer cartridges used to last for months even with heavy use for graphics, but this one requires new cartridges in weeks with light use. The double-size cartridges don't seem to last much longer.

Despite frequent cleaning and alignments, the printer often produces streaky/striped graphics.

For several months or longer, the printer's software would annoyingly update automatically at least a few times per week - as though they decided to work out the bugs after they sold it.

The scanner program is more complicated that it was on my previous printers. The copy features works OK.

On the whole, this machine stinks.

 "HP... Never again." 2010-07-24
By TheBuckinghamPalace
This is my 3rd HP printer. I don't know why... everyone I've bought has been terrible. I guess because it always seems like the biggest bang for your buck. They are always running deals at Target, Costco, Walmart, etc... Don't fall for it. HP is a terrible company. If you only use your printer once ever couple of months, this printer might make it through the year. Maybe. Other problems? Oh yeah! The ink cartridges seem so be bone dry after 30 pages or so. I'm pretty sure it would be faster, less frustrating, and cheaper to start using the Kinkos/FedEx store to print out all my coupons. It's also really loud. I would leave the room when it starts printing, but then I couldn't sit in front of it while manually feeding the paper through it in order to prevent paper jams. And there are paper jams. Lots of paper jams! The only part of the printer that worked semi problem free is the scanner. Which I've used maybe three times. The quality was terrible, but it worked. Let me see, did I leave anything out? Well, it's ugly, flimsy, poorly made, and in the end a terrible deal. I'm tired of HP. I know they're a cheaper brand so I shouldn't expect too much of them, but this is the last straw! DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. I started searching Google to try and see if I could fix it myself, and whatayaknow... I have trouble even finding an article with my specific problem because there are SO MANY OTHER POSTS about EVERYTHING ELSE on this printer breaking down, not working, or looking terrible. I really want to know if the people that rated this higher than 3 stars got to use it more than a week before they rated it. Either that, or HP has an entire department of employees hired just to spam good ratings on these sites. Those are the only explinations. So let's sum up: 1) DON'T BUY THIS. 2)If you already have-I'm sorry. I really am... 3)And don't buy this.

     "Poor Descreption of Product" 2010-09-25
    By SatelliteBill
When I was searching for a printer I was searching for a Portable Printer. I selected this printer because the price was right. But this was far from a portable printer as could be expected. What it is, is a small printer for someone like a college student with limited space, it is certainly not a portable printer. I am a sales person who needs a portable printer that I can take on the road with me. This is not that small.

"HP Deskjet 6940 printer has no factory Windows 7 driver, and TIPS...!" 2010-06-18
    By scottls1 (Kalispell, MT USA)
HP has not made a full featured factory driver for the 6940 (Complain to support, and maybe...?!).

Win 7 auto-installs a generic driver that works ok for basic printing "only".

This prints High Quality, and I'd definitely recommend getting it!

All-in-one printers, are a waste of money for most! I prefer a separate scanner, that have lasted me for years! Epson Perfection V30 Color Scanner (good cheap scanner, and use Office Mode!)

There was no Ink level bubble showing when I printed (works on my XP system/ with downloaded driver), and no toolbox to troubleshoot?

I made the mistake of calling HP outsourced support (5 times/ 3 hrs on phone!), and what a bunch of "clueless" techs!

One was Very rude. Three cut me off, and one called back at 1am in the morning.

I would NOT recommend letting them log directly onto your computer!

I finally got ahold of a 2yr tech, that showed me how print a test page that also shows ink levels showing on E/F bars in the middle (wastes some ink though! Grrr!)-

Press the Power button, & turn on printer.

Now hold down the Power button, and press/hold the Cancel button (X) for 5sec.

Release buttons, and test page will print.

    ~~

To REALLY save on using up their "Small" Color ink cartdrige (ALL HP printers use color ink, even on text printing!- Black cartdrige is much bigger!)-

Right click on the 6940... Printer Icon (Control Panel/Devices & Printers...).

    Printing preferences

    Color Tab

Tick- Print In Grayscale, and Black Print Cartdrige Only. Apply/OK (leave other color settings alone!).

    ~~

Note: If a blank page prints, or you want to "temp" print Color/WP envelopes (only saves setting for that print session, then auto-back to Black only)-

    File, Print, Preferences (reverse above)...

Note2!- If you are color printing photos..., that you want to last for more than 5yrs!?- DON'T buy inexpensive color refills, as they use Cheap Dye instead of HP's long-lasting pigment!

    ~

I also purchased their full replacement 3yr extended warranty, for 25 bucks (It's rare for a printer to last me 3yrs?)???

     "Good basic printer" 2009-12-02
    By G. Frank (Atlanta, GA)
The reason I selected this printer is for the fact that the paper is enclosed in a covered area rather than just being left out open on a paper-feed tray. This helps keep the paper from becoming damaged by having the edges bent which would cause paper jams or the paper becoming dirty. (you'd be amazed at how many people eat stuff while hanging around the office printer while waiting for their documents to print.)

This is one quality "Photo" printer! It will handel heavy duty paper. Whats weird is it will also grab 2 or 3 sheets of regular paper. I have been amazed and people who I have givem them too think they are real photographs.

Also has special "ink" for doing just photo's.

"Save your money - DO NOT buy this "printer"" 2009-04-30
    By Geoff Southworth
I own a HP computer- so I thought when I needed a printer to also buy a HP - maybe they could talk to each other. Mistake #1. I purchased this "printer" in September 2008 and have since gotten to learn how to uninstall & reinstall the printer several times a week. The little light on the front burned out (after 3 months) and can not be fixed (HP support agreed). However, it is ONLY this little light that tells the machine you have cleared the paper jam, or that you have refilled the paper. So now, EVERY SINGLE TIME I need to refill the paper (because I forgot to load it daily) I get to uninstall & reinstall. If I get any type of jam, I get to uninstall & reinstall. If anything happens - including putting in new ink cartridges - I get to uninstall & reinstall. AND HP Support agrees this is my only option, other than buying another "printer." The machine does not recognize original HP ink cartridges, so the machine can never tell you the estimated ink level and frequently I get error messages of "not corect cartridge." And you can guess how I get to clear this message (uninstall again, reboot computer, reinstall printer).

Yes I have gotten quick at doing this, but still it is not an enjoyable task to having to do several times a week, because you bought this "printer!"

I am only waiting until I exhaust my inventory of those expensive ink cartridges until I dispose of this piece of trash. I hope Amazon prints this, although I admit I did not buy this thing from them.

"Poor Reliability - Cheap for a reson" 2010-09-10
By T. Pinkney (Modesto, CA USA)
Bought several of these for use in classrooms at work. They have always malfunctioned, all their power buttons get stuck. One gave up the ghost after 7 months. Another always reads that it has no paper in the tray when it is full. The third says it has bad cartridges. HP refuses to do anything as their warranty is only for 90 days on these printers. We still have 932c going but brand new printers fail in months! Sad. Bought Canon replacements and haven't looked back.

"This printer is too temperamental for standard print needs" 2010-08-20
    By A. Stromberg
I was thrilled to receive this printer for free when I purchased my new laptop computer 6 months ago; at least I was thrilled for a week or so. After that I realized that it was going to be a high maintenance pain in the neck. Seriously, printers have a very simple job these days, the last generation laser printer was the most reliable printer I've ever used (also an HP product), so I figured that this was going to be a safe bet. To my surprise, the HP Deskjet D2680 is extremely buggy and is difficult to manage.

I am currently working my printer from a HP laptop computer running Windows 7, so theoretically I should have a nice match; hp printer and hp computer. Sadly the performance of the printer has not benefitted from keeping it all in the family. I have real trouble if I utilize a refilled ink cartridge (in an effort to cut costs) and the printer simply refuses to print. I also receive errors when inserting good print cartridges, not just refilled ones. Nothing has broken to this point, but the interaction with the computer and the temperamental behavior with cartridges grinds progress to a halt and makes the printer worthless. Not worth the effort to get it going. Avoid this product if it is still on the market when you are shopping for a simple printer.

"I got it for free and I still paid too much" 2010-05-14
    By BluntGirl (Newark, CA, US)
This is the worst printer I have ever owned. The power switch was stuck on when I took it out of the box, and it never got unstuck. It died after only two and half months of fault-filled light duty service, having printed less than 100 pages for me. The best thing I can say about it was that it was free with the purchase of a Windows 7 PC and monitor package. However, I now think the retailer should have paid me for taking it out of their store.

     "Buyer Beware!!!!!!!!" 2010-04-19
By JK (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA USA)
Just bought the HP Deskjet D2680 a couple days ago. Biggest problem - loading the software (HP driver) killed my Canoscan scanner. After I loaded the HP software and subsequently tried to use my scanner, I got the message back "Cannot communicate with scanner" and another message saying that "There is a TWAIN error, maybe the scanner is not connected." Scanner would not work. Removed the HP software, reloaded the scanner software, and the scanner worked again. Reloaded the HP driver - scanner died again!!! Other D2680 problems - prints slightly off-center, both vertically and horizontally on standard paper, and the ink goes "bye-bye" quickly. I loved my previous HP inkjet printer (D5740). It was a workhorse that served me well for 4 years. The D2680 is a huge disappointment. Unusable. It's going back into the box and back to the store.

"not worth the free bundle price" 2010-04-18

This printer came in a bundled package from best buy. Nothing but problems since installing. The installation software hung up the computer. All of the lights keep blinking suggesting a "problem". Installed most current drivers from the HP site. Problem persisted. The HP support site instructs me to unplug the printer, waits 60 seconds and replug?? Tried this several times and the problem persists. Will try to return this lemon.

Update: returned/exchanged printer. New printer worked fine for the first two print jobs. Then the printer failed to print again. I would advise not to purchase this printer.

"Short term - great; long term - no" 2010-09-18
    By Lisa S (NH, USA)
We bought this exactly two years ago. It has been a great little home printer. I print about one page/day on average. It does use a fair amount of ink, but a printer is only an ink delivery system, right? Two weeks ago I would have given this model 4 1/2 stars. However....I turned it on one day and it simply would not print and the paper would feed halfway through and stop. My husband and I put probably four hours into it trying to figure it out. We tried everything and between us we are pretty good figurers. The HP Solution Center that comes with the software seemed to answer everything but our situation. Finally, I had time to call HP's 800-number. I was quite pleased to get a live person very quickly. But then I realized her English knowledge was very limited and who knows what country she was in. She asked me if I had tried about three very minor things, which I had. Then without going particularly deep into "here's what you can try to fix it," her training had obviously told her to stop there and give me this great answer: we'll give you a discount on this particular new model and it will only cost you $80 (later I saw Amazon sold the same thing for $55). I told her I really like the printer and want to get it fixed. It boils down to this....if it is out of warranty, it goes to the dump. I told her how environmentally irresponsible it is of HP to operate this way. I doubt she understood me because she only kept repeating the $80 offer. I told her she had done a good job, but I was very unimpressed with HP. My husband pulled the D4360 apart more since we had nothing to lose and found broken plastic gears. It is toast. So short-term, it's a good printer; long-term, America will have a lot of printers in its landfills.

We can't buy enough of these printers! We are using 2 and have 2 on the shelf for back up, and my husband just asked me to order 2 more... just in case. We are simple souls and don't want all the bells and whistles. Fancy printers die so quickly; been there, done that. This workhorse just keeps on printing. If you want a simple printer for word processing, spreadsheet, and the internet, this is the Rock Star! Look elsewhere for the frustration of top of the line models. And, talk about cheap!!

"Too much software!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Caused me a service call!!" 2010-03-28
By T. Stehr (Bethlehem, PA USA)
Well, I am mostly pleased with the printing although the "draft" mode produces funky looking (almost like italics)lines of print interspersed throughout the documents. The printer is also rather finicky with regard to feeding paper. The paper which I was using successfully in my old HP and Canon printers will not feed in the D4360; fortunately I had a pack of HP paper which feeds very well. The ink supply does seem to be going down rather quickly; although I haven't really printed enough sheets to comment on ink usage.

Now for my BIG complaint. About 4 weeks after I installed my HP D4360, my computer slowed to a crawl, and then it would not allow me to do anything. I could not open my Word or Excel documents nor access email. Since the printer had been installed 4 weeks before, I never suspected it as the cause of the problem. I hired a computer service man to find out what was causing my problem. After finding out that my temp register had over 32,000 files, we deleted them; my computer started working again. But where did they come from? The temp register started filling up again!! ...16,000 files in a few hours! To make a long story longer, we discovered an HP file (hpqtra08.exe) constantly running in the background ..... creating temp files. I called HP tech support, and they told me I could uninstall the HP Digital Imaging software, and that would get rid of hpqtra08. I was told that this software was for the scanner in an all-in-one printer. They had no good reason as to why HP downloaded this software for my D4360 since it has no scanner. Nor did they seem inclined to offer me anything to help defray the cost of a service call which cost more than the printer. Well, now I got that off my chest!

If you do buy a HP D4360 and start having computer problems, I hope this is helpful. HP D4360 DeskJet Printer

     "Great Little Workhorse" 2010-08-10

For a very low price this is a Great Little Workhorse for everyday office (or personal) use! Currently, I have 4 printers (1 Epson Artisan 800 for photos & scanning; 2 HP LaserJet printers for B/W printing & this HP DeskJest 6940 Inkjet Color Printer). I chose this unit to replace an HP Printer we ran nearly 7 days a week for 5 years, and the space allocated for it was too small for most printers, but this one fit right in. The ink lasts a very long time as well. It also came with an ethernet cable so printing from the Mac it's connected to is quite fast. Of course you can still connect it with a USB cable if desired. I did not get the quick start up installation guide that was supposed to be in the box, but after years of installing printers, we all pretty much know what to do. I bought it through Amazon.com and as always when making a purchase from Amazon, it was a breeze to buy, shipping was very fast & it was exactly as featured. Overall, I would highly recommend this product to anyone.

I bought this printer (6940) as a future back-up machine to a workhorse 6540 that is still going strong after 5+ years of moderate-heavy use. I've also previously purchased two others of this same model (6940) for family members, because it uses the same ink cartridges as my old machine and I've found reloading the ink cartridges myself fairly easy and very economical, using ink purchased online. With all family members on the same cartridges, it's easy to have extras ready to go. The printer is a real bargain, and I use an HP Wireless Printer Upgrade Kit to use it wirelessly.

I believe this is one of the best work horse printers for the value. This is the second one I have had, I purchased the first one four years ago and it had worked perfectly untill the end of June 2010. It is also hooked into my home network thru the "network connection built into the printer", so all the computers can access and print. I also purchased the add on so you can print on both sides of the paper, which I transfered to the new printer with no problems. I give this product "five stars" and as long as they are available, I will use this printer.

This printer is a piece of junk if you need to print more than 3 double-sided pages. it constantly feeds multiple pages through on the second side. everything gets out of order -- there's half a page printed here and the other half printed over there on another piece of paper. all you have is a bunch of trash at the end. it makes you furious b/c you have a printer but you can't print what you want to without babying the thing through printing a couple of pages at a time. no one has time for that sort of nonsense. i had the same problem with my last hp printer which is why i got the new one. i guess double sided printing is just a lot to ask from the engineering wizards on the deskjet team. I know it's not their most expensive printer but it should at least be able to provide the functionality it is purported to have. I want to throw this thing off a cliff. if you buy this printer i hope your experience is much better than mine has been.

     "Staples." 2010-05-12

Was bought as a bundle with Inspirion 519 from Staples.

After 11 months copier went out. Accoring to hp a microchip

problem. Was still printing so kept printer. After another

month had printer problem and STAPLES would not acknowled

this as a bundle item which it was when bought it from

them. Supposed item was rung up separately from bundle

was suppose to have warranty on both items. Now it is

not printing and STAPLES will not honor the warranty

I took out on both items. HP printer worked perfectly

till ran into copier problem then the printer went

out a month later. HP would have honored the one year

warranty if would have went with a new printer the

time copier went out. Having the 3 yr warranty with

STAPLES assumed it was covered by them now am out one

    printer.

     "Great printer but...." 2010-05-11

This a great printer/all in one, but the setup program was a nightmare. Required going to HP's website for a fix, took hours. Once all that **** was out of the way I have to say it works great. It's fast, quiet and easy to use. Also pretty inexpensive.

Upgraded from prior, now defunct, HP All-In-One/Printer-Scanner-Copier models. New features, better software, faster - nice. No issues installing in Vista or Linux. No worries.

After purchasing this printer my next door neighbor, who has owned this very same model printer for 4 months, had his printer break. Needless to say I am now very leery of this product. I had believed that hp made a reliable product but now I am not so sure. Only time will tell !

Bought the F4480 yesterday and spent about 3 hours trying to make it work properly. Finally gave up after reinstalling the drivers twice, downloading a separate driver installation package from the HP website, as well as applying yet another patch from the HP website.

First of all, BUYER BEWARE - this USB printer doesn't actually come with a USB cord. Brilliant idea. You'll have to supply that yourself.

Second of all, the manual does a nice job of listing a bunch of impressive features, then noting that these features may or may not work with your particular model/computer/operating system/software configuration - in other words, there's no way to know whether something's wrong with the installation, or if the printer doesn't like something about your computer setup, or if it's just a piece of crap.
